What if democracy’s not actually at stake?
Central Maine ^ | 6/30/24 | Jim Fossel

Democrats don't believe the election comes down to this; nor should we.

Democrats have a slogan this presidential election: “Democracy is at stake.”

Or, they might have a slogan. They’re still running the numbers on it, and they’re not quite sure whether to go with it. While Biden’s “brain trust” is reportedly committed to that message, other Democrats aren’t so sure; apparently it doesn’t poll all that well. By debating the strategy, they’re making it clear that they don’t really believe it. Of course, treating it as a campaign tactic makes that obvious.

If Democrats seriously believed Trump was a threat to democracy, they’d have nominated somebody completely different who could appeal to more of the country.

snip

It’s not just that Democrats aren’t treating this campaign as if they really believed democracy were in peril; they’re not preparing for the future as if it were, either. While they’re planning to resist a potential future Trump administration, they seem to be mostly going about it in the usual ways. Activist groups, despite their rhetoric, are planning for lawsuits, adverse Supreme Court rulings and potential IRS audits, according to the New York Times.

That’s not how you prepare for a dictatorship – it’s how you subvert an administration with which you disagree. If you’re really worried about a dictatorship, you plan marches in the streets, sit-ins, mass demonstrations or a general strike, not lawsuits. Rather than plotting a general strike, we see labor leaders weighing who to endorse: Teamsters President Sean O’Brien, for instance, recently met with Trump and is slated to speak to the Republican National Convention.

Their phony hysteria is just the same old thing:

"this Republican nominee is SO terrible that you just HAVE to vote for the Democrat"

Four years earlier: "this Republican nominee is SO terrible that you just HAVE to vote for the Democrat"

Four years earlier: "this Republican nominee is SO terrible that you just HAVE to vote for the Democrat"

Four years earlier: "this Republican nominee is SO terrible that you just HAVE to vote for the Democrat"

Etc.

Trump, though, IS an ACTUAL threat to their cozy little world, where the Bushes, Dole, McCain and Romney never really were. And Trump has already destroyed some of it. The controlling media is a shell of its former self, Roe vs Wade is gone, and now Chevron is too.

A victory in November will be epic, and will indeed be frightening to the Democrats. They have been used to vanquishing Republicans. But this particular one is STILL standing, despite EVERYTHING they could think of being thrown against him.

We're not a "democracy."

We're not even a constitional republic anymore.

We have been overthrown by the Deep State which only faintly pretends that the voters have some influence on the elections.

democracy is not in danger because you are right we are not, but the democracy tag they spew is THIER DEMOCRACY the way they want it the way they see it and you will accept it.

Dear President Trump do the right thing and immediately start debating RFK Jr establishing him as the legitimate Democratic candidate.

Do not debate Biden again or any other opponent the Democratic machine puts out in his place. No further debates with a Dem machine candidate.

The future of the Republic needs you at this time to be greater than the aspirations of any one man.

Don't give the machine a chance to get back on their feet or finish a plan they may already have begun, take this opportunity and remove them from any chance of obtaining the office of Presidency.

Yep. Their “democracy” is a euphemism for Swamp Rule.

“A victory in November will be epic, and will indeed be frightening to the Democrats.”

I agree on both counts but also think it would take 50 years of sane leadership to get things back on track.

For some reason, the vast majority of our system opposes sanity right now.

I think the only thing that can organize everyone into coherency is very hard times. And the times aren’t hard enough yet. Hopefully I’m wrong about this.

Communist Russia had their Supreme Soviet too (their parliament). Stalin would have said to your face that they were a democracy.

Demcrats want it all for themselves. At least two of the Prosecuting attorneys of the 4 trials against Trump went to the White House for guidance and instructions. One of the PA came from the White House to NYC for the trial in NYC. The Dems want a dictatorship. Only Trump stands in the way. Certainly not McConnell, Romney, Paul Ryan or their ilk.

The Democrats will do anything to protect democracy including imprisoning their political opponent and working to keep him off the ballot. If that doesn’t break your irony meter then you must be a Democrat.

To be fair, every Republican apparatchik says the same thing every 4 years about the Dems.

We faced 8 years of Obama and 8 of Clinton. We’re not dead yet.

These 4 of Bidet have been, arguably, the worst in terms of inflation, lawfare, OSHA mandates. At the same time, guns aren’t being confiscated, retirement money isn’t being nationalized, and EVs are on the decline.

The only elections in my lifetime that I believe were pretty important were 1980 and 2016.

I wrote elsewhere that The Presidency went from a job where the nation wanted a guy who had ideas and leadership qualities, to sort of like the slot for lead singer in Van Halen. The corollary is that regardless of who gets into the WH, the American People are Eddie, Michael, and Alex-a monster band that is invariant to the guy in the singer slot. WE run the nation.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t big issues on the ballot, and that we should stay home. I prefer Donald Lee Roth.

But let’s be honest.

East Germany was a “democracy”

The People’s Republic of China is a “democracy”

North Korea is a “democracy”

“Democracy” is a word which changes to sometimes a totally contrary meaning, depending on who is using it and the context.

There is a democratic process, in which there are enumerated votes from all the enfranchised voters, and the majority rules. But this process is subject to periodic review of the accomplishments of the elected individuals, and the opportunity to vote for somebody else if the previously elected person does not measure up to expectations, again, the majority rules.

There are so many things wrong in our country, with our “system” right now, that I think it will take more than at least another 4 years to straighten it out. Even if Donald Trump is elected & tries to do a good job, he will be fighting Democrats so much that he will only be able to get part of his plans into effect I fear.

Hey! Here’s to not being dead yet.

Now, let’s get back to watching tv and drinking beer.

Get back to us when we’re almost dead.

Admittedly, their “GOP candidate is a threat”* is cranked up to “11,” but you’re right it’s the same hysterical shriek every time.

*I refuse to use the cliched metaphor “on steroids.”

“he will be fighting Democrats so much that he will only be able to get part of his plans into effect”

You’re right of course. Not just the Dems, but Repubs too. The Uniparty. Hopefully we can change congress enough to help with that but I’m not holding my breath.

The bad guys stormed the engine, threw out the conductor and took control of the train. I have a feeling they’re not going to just hand it back over based on how we vote. They worked hard to steal this thing, it’s going to be a fight to get it back.

I don’t want a ‘democracy.’ The French Revolution and guillotines was a ‘democracy.’ Small ‘d’ democracy is MOB RULE, period.

This country was founded as a constitutional republic. A representative form of government protected and regulated by a constitution of individual rights and prohibitions to government.

Our founders envisioned only the House of Representatives as being the peoples’ voice that is frequently reassessed (every 2 years) as the pulse of the peoples’ hopes, wants and dreams.

Other longer term and ‘union’ based issues (such as national defense and foreign affairs) were envisioned as the Senate purview - they were to be elected by states’ legislatures. We really effed that up with popular voting, IMO.

The only solace that I have right now is President Trump and the USSC’s recent rulings against ridiculous government overreach like the Chevron Doctrine, etc.

I’ve heard that President Trump wants to be a dictator for just one day. A day that I believe that would go a Loonnnnnggg way towards beating back this monster of an oppressive government we’ve let fester and metastasize.

THREAT TO DEMOCRACY is as fake as the democrats.

America is a REPUBLIC, not a democracy. This needs to be pounded away everywhere, because there’s an enormous difference between the two, and it’s a difference with a distinction.
Blue states are passing legislation to eliminate the Electoral College, one of the great checks and balances in our Constitution. They’re getting away with this because America’s youth are not being properly educated, and this whole idea that America is a democracy is a huge part of the problem.
America is a republic and we need to pass this along to the next generation before it’s too late to stop the left wing rot.
