Trying to concentrate on the voice in his ear but because of his age and dementia he didn’t have the presence of mind or training to pull it off smoothly.
Many tv hosts have to deal with show producers constantly feeding them info while they’re live on stage, but it takes training.

I think it was just due to where the debate moderators were sitting. When Trump was talking, Joe looked to his (Joe’s) right, where Trump was. But when he was answering a question from the moderator, he seemed to be looking slightly to his left.
Same with Trump, reversed - when Trump was responding to the moderator, he seemed to be looking slightly to his right.

At one point he had a troubled look and then pressed on his ear like he was adjusting an earpiece.

I was wondering why he kept looking down and had a pen in his hand. I didn’t think they were supposed to have and/or take notes.
I think that was his way of processing what he was hearing in his earpiece.
And his closing two minute statement. You’d think he would have that down pat, but no.
On a serious note: I think the podiums were angled toward each other and the moderators were directly in front. When he looked to his left he was looking at the moderators.
Yes, I agree. I think sometimes Joe was looking at the moderators and sometimes he was looking at Trump.
He looked really weird sometimes with his mouth open.
