Muslim mob in Pakistan lynches tourist over alleged blasphemy, torches police station

A Muslim mob stormed a police station and destroyed parked police vehicles in northwestern Pakistan, Madyan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

As reported by AP, the mob seized a man detained there and lynched him on accusations of desecrating the Quran on Thursday, according to local police official Rahim Ullah.

Mohammad Ismail, a tourist staying at a hotel in Madyan town, became the target of locals who accused him of blasphemy. Police officers reportedly took Ismail to the station to safeguard him, but a growing mob pursued them.

The mob proceeded to storm the station, seize Ismail, brutally assault him to death, and subsequently set fire to his body, leaving it abandoned on the road.

“Additional police forces have arrived in Madyan to bring the situation under control,” Ullah said.

It remains unclear whether any of the attackers were arrested.

Incidents of violence against individuals accused of blasphemy are frequent in Pakistan, a nation governed by conservative Islamic principles where blasphemy charges can lead to severe penalties, including death.

Persuasive demagogues, religious or otherwise, can be surprisingly influential in getting people worked up. Martin Luther, for instance, was a key player in the mass murder and expulsion of Jews from a number of German regions.

Luther launched a polemic against vagrants in his 1528 preface to Liber Vagatorum, saying that the Jews had contributed Hebrew words as a main basis of the Rotwelsch cryptolect. He warned in the admonitory preface Christians not to give them alms as it was, in his opinion, to forsake the truly poor.[233][234]

Lynching/mob justice was a thing in the US up to the 1960’s. In fact, about 1/3 of all lynchings were not even racially motivated, just general mob justice. So, while the motivations were different, this sort of thing was common in the US for quite a long time,

Based on the Pentateuch, the scriptural penalty for blasphemy is death, in Judaism and its twin offshoots. While Christian and Jewish clerics have backed off, as their respective flocks became skeptical of many religious traditions, and some drifted away altogether, as a result of the Enlightenment, these exhortations remain immutable in the texts handed down from antiquity.

Ultimately, men, at the street level, decided some traditions were less equal than others, and their political leaders followed, lest they be left behind. But that hasn’t happened in some pockets of Islam.

This happens all the time and yet Muslims in general, particularly in western societies, ignore that such actions have become the face of Islam, and the history of Muslim conquests by the sword are brought forward to today.
