Every U.S. citizen now owes roughly $100,000 in federal debt. That is the grim news from the most recent study by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). CBO data show that federal debt has been growing at an unsustainable rate for decades and will continue to do so in coming years. At some point, the United States will hit a fiscal cliff, when lack of confidence in the ability of the federal government to repay the debt will result in sharply higher interest rates and default. We are in the final years of our debt crisis.
Congress is simply unable to bring federal expenditures into balance with federal revenues to stabilize and reduce federal debt. Congress has passed numerous statutory rules mandating this solution, but these rules are routinely circumvented and suspended. There is little discussion of the debt crisis in this election year because elected officials have in effect thrown in the towel.
However, the states have now launched a Hail Mary to solve the debt crisis. State attorneys general will soon file a lawsuit in the U.S. Supreme Court, which seeks a Declaratory Judgement against Congress for failing to fulfil its constitutional duty under Article V to record and count state applications for a fiscal responsibility amendment.
Article V of the U.S. Constitution gives the states as well as Congress the power to propose amendments. The states have submitted applications for a fiscal responsibility amendment for centuries, but Congress has failed to record and count these applications. In 1979, two thirds of the states had submitted applications for a fiscal responsibility amendment, but Congress failed to count these applications or call the amendment convention.
This year, Rep. Jody Arrington (R-TX) filed HCR 24,

HCR 24, would require Congress to fulfill its constitutional duty to record and count state applications for a fiscal responsibility amendment and call the amendment convention if the requisite applications by two thirds of the states is met. Unfortunately, this legislation has made little headway in Congress.
Citizens are now left with the Hail Mary solution. The Supreme Court must issue a Declaratory Judgment against Congress for failing to record and count state applications for a fiscal responsibility amendment.
Congress must then record and count the state applications. If the requisite two-thirds of the states have submitted such applications, Congress must then set the time and place for an amendment convention. If two-thirds of the states in the convention agree on a fiscal responsibility amendment, the proposed amendment must be submitted to the states for ratification. Three-fourths of the states must ratify the proposed amendment for it to be incorporated in the Constitution.
Might need to do a little collective soul searching before trying to get Her attention.
How about if we mint a 30 trillion dollar Kryptonite coin and pay ourselves back?
The Supreme Court must issue a Declaratory Judgment against Congress
It is important to remember that SCOTUS gave itself the power to rule acts of Congress (and the states) unconstitutional. The Constitution itself is silent on the matter. On the other hand Congress does have the Constitutional power to determine what SCOTUS can rule on.
Which kind of Kryptonite?
I love seeing this move.
If the clowns in the House, Senate, and White House had any sense of PERSONAL responsibility for overspending and incurring debt, I think the people would be more forgiving.
But just like embezzlers or Ponzi schemers, they lied and lied for a hundred years about their so-called budgets and the 'necessity' of the debt. Mostly they just blew off the whole concept of national debt hoping no one would bring it up. And no one has until about two years ago.
Then these bums make the OUTRAGEOUS claim that it is a debt owed by all the citizens to the Treasury and worse, they calculate it as the amount owed by TAXPAYERS per capita. This is something Goebbels would invent.
The OTHER people who owe the money back are the NONTAXPAYERS who freeloaded off the government teat for generation after generation. The lazy, the welfare queens who bred their own children and used them as a means of getting government support. The chronically unemployed, the addicts, and other dependents, including illegals are included here. And many more.
They all need imprisonment or indentured servitude.
Don't accept that the taxpayers are the ones in debt. The deadbeats and grifters are just praying you won't notice the switcheroo.
Seems to me that if we held those accountable for fleecing US over the past few decades in addition to massively cutting Uncle Sugars workforce, it would put a substantial dent in the debt if not wipe it out completely and realizing a surplus.
he American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money. ~
Alexis de Tocqueville
Two financial watchdogs mentioned when / if no one buys our debt ( $10 trillion rolls over needing buyers this year), talk about our government putting up US government owned land as collateral for US Bonds, Treasury notes- could explain what has been going on with all the BLM land scandals.
In line with the Brics backing their currency in commodities, resources and Gold.
Exciting times indeed.
Want to get to a balanced budget? Apportion the spending as follows:
Total spend / 2 = “Tax burden”
Tax Burden /435 = Tax per congressional district
Tax Burden /100 = Tax per senate seat
A tax bill is then created for each state using the following formula:
# of congressional seats x tax per congressional district
plus
2 (number of senate seats) x the tax per senate seat
equals
Total state tax bill (could be broken into monthly payments)
To enforce the payment of the tax bill:
If the State is 30 in arrears, the state’s legislature and governor’s pay is held in escrow until the state is current.
If the State is 60 days in arrears, the States shall have no vote in the House until brought current.
If the State is 90 days in arrears, the State shall have no vote in the Senate until brought current.
No Federal income tax
States are free to tax their citizens to raise the revenue as needed.
States may NOT tax anyone not a citizen of the state.
I call this representative apportionment.
All of us get goodies from the Federal Government. Take away some of those is a no-win for the politicians.
Maybe having a group of individual states force through some form of restraint will spread the “blame” thin enough to allow cutbacks to happen.
We elected them and we keep re-electing them. We own it.
We’d better not take the bait!
Just need to enforce the Constitution we have.
“If the State is 60 days in arrears, the States shall have no vote in the House until brought current.
If the State is 90 days in arrears, the State shall have no vote in the Senate until brought current.”
How many days does it take before they are kicked out of the Union?
If you play this game, what do you do if a state says “I’ll pay my bill and then I’m out”?
If its not in the Constitution, stop playing games. We are going to default on our debt. We are in this together. The only question is “What’s next?”.
If the answer must recognize the fact that we are broke, and that the pigs lining up at the trough will go unfed.
If we recognize this reality, prosperity can return.
Not to long ago Zimbabwe was printing Trillion Dollar Bills to pay off their debt. They were being sold on line for a couple bucks and sold out. I did pick up a wrapper 100 million dollars bills that I use as bookmarks.
100%
So there are rules, procedures which government should follow. When government does not and flips the citizens the Bird, then what?
The cheap kind - we don't need any more debt....
That implies all these elections have been fair and honorable without massive fraud. Thanks to Trump exposing this epic corruption in every direction, we now know better. Or should know better.
