'Normal and natural': Scientists admit the animal kingdom is a lot gayer than they thought
Upworthy ^ | 6/22/2024 | Tod Perry

...science has slowly been striking down the idea that homosexuality is unnatural by proving that it’s seen across countless species, from bonobo monkeys to black swans to fruit flies. A landmark 2019 research paper found that over 1500 species of animals exhibit homosexual behavior.

A new report published on June 20, 2024, in the journal PLOSOne shows that same-sex sexual behavior in the animal kingdom is much more prevalent than previously documented. The big reason is that researchers have been underreporting their observations.

Two questions for any study, before you can determine if it is accurate or not?

1. Is it Peer Reviewed? Has somebody, not affiliated withe original study gone over it with a fine tooth comb?

2. Is it reproducible? Can somebody else, gather data and show the same results?

Without passing those tests, it is wortheless.

Note that in the animal kingdom homosexual behavior seems to be mostly male. Few lesbian fruit flies or bonobos. For the most part the homosexual behavior displayed in animals is sexual opportunism not exclusive preference or creatures of the same sex.

These “scientists” are so driven to prove that their own personal flaws are “normal”. Dearest “scientists”...Face it! You are abnormal freakos! Nothing in you weak, misinterpreted “studies” will change that reality. Do society a favor...fade into obscurity.

The author has confused the word “normal” with the word “aberrant”.

I’ve never understood this angle. They’re comparing people to animals. Really? Didn’t they think this through at all?

When it occurs, it occurs for two specific reasons, as an act of domination, or during a period of sexual immaturity. It occurs in domestic animals raised in a same-sex environment.

The bonobo chimps are a special case that shows that in female-dominated primate species, rampant sex is used to garner favors such as food, protection, or shelter.

This is a terrible article. It is not in the least scientific, and the conclusion is not supported by everything that was said before it. Pure propaganda.

There are many animal behaviors that cannot be justified in human behavior.

Murder, slavery, conquest war, rape, infanticide, cannibalism, mind control, dispossession, parasitism, theft, robbery, kidnapping. All natural survival behaviors.

To call something natural has less moral weight than these researchers think, but natural law proponents had best limit philosophizing to human kind.

That’s one possible interpretation.

It is unprovable given the current scientific limitations to determine intent of action for birds.

So researchers take the available data and hypothesize.

There is a pair-bonded set of male penguins, and male dolphins engage in mutual frontage.

I don’t think it’s always a dominance issue.

It still has little to say to human morality either way

Two homosexuals fisting each other has absolutely nothing in common with fruit flies. Animals do things for survival. Homosexual behavior isn't compatible with survival.

Of course...I am absolutely guilty of anthropomorphizing the behavior of the bird in that case. But I have spent many hours as a birder observing their behavior (especially Blue Jays and Crows, both of which are members of the Corvid family and are provably the most intelligent of the species) and have noticed VERY human-like behavior in both...most humorously...greed.

But yes, I concede the point. Some people would never agree to accept that interpretation.

I do it myself. I’ve caught hell for referring to a bird as “handsome” or “pretty”. Of course, these same people raise money calling bird “pretty”. Hypocrites.

Exactly...and it was even more crazy that local media is outlets are picking this crap up and distributing it over the information marketplace.

Garbage news.

I work with plenty of homosexual people. One or two have even been fiscal conservatives. Their lifestyle isn’t healthy or appropriate but yeah I have gotten along quite famously with them—they didn’t flaunt their choices and I kept my heterosexual adventures to myself. We do our jobs and things are fine.

Like you say, it is the mob mentality that hurts society.

All of those occur in the natural world.

Orangutangs and ducks force unwilling females, chimps wipe out neighboring bands, the new male in the territory kills the infants of the previous male, cowbirds lay an egg in a host bird’s nest and destroy her eggs if she doesn’t raise the cowbird chick (slavery), slave-making ants go on raids to take the pupae of other species, a fungus makes zombies of ants, toxoplasmosis alters the behavior of infected mouse and human alike
