Artificial intelligence will result in adults earning a basic income, billionaire Elon Musk said.
AI could lead to a world of self-driving vehicles and other computers and machines that replace humans in work settings and perform virtually all physical and mental labor, Business Insider reported.
When that happens, Musk said adults, regardless of their wealth or employment status, will receive a universal basic income.

Whenever anyone talks about Universal Income it usually turns out to be like $1000 a month.
Hey, offer me $1000 a month and I won’t turn it down. But that amount won’t pay my mortgage. I can’t survive on $12,000 a year. So, a job is a necessity. If AI takes away a very large number of jobs (I think it will) then that’s a problem. And if “Universal Income” is a fix, then people need to start talking about much larger amounts.
And they aren’t.
if it does, it’s only because a large number of people are dependent on a very mechanized and mechanizable economy; such an end was baked in from the beginning.
Sad. Monasteries and agrarians will be OK, at least until they blot out the sun and the water turns to blood.
I read a SF story long ago describing a future world where everyone gets paid a “Basic Citizen’s Stipend,” or “BCS”.
People refer to those letters as standing for “Born, Collect, Stagnate.”
I wish I could remember the title of that story. Googling those words finds nothing.
Sounds like early retirement !
Best point of the thread, Chode, Thanks!
Ever notice how AI is never talked about being implemented in Sub-Saharan Africa and other 3rd-world crapholes? Why don’t these tech giants use AI to teach Africans skills so they don’t have to come to Western nations all the time?
They said the same exact things at the outset of the computer chip pro0liferating the globe.
It’s decades later now-
have computers created or destroyed more jobs?
I should say I think there will be market, possibly a large e one, for human made goods. My corollary is the guys who still build handmade bicycles and shoes. The machine made versions may actually be better but people like the hand made stuff.
“I like Musk, however I think he’s wrong on this.”
Who cares if he’s right or wrong, he just needs to SHUT UP on this issue.
People are going to require a strong, long term sense of purpose, once the AI Steamroller pushes them off the road of steady employment. To repeat, this will be required, not just desired. Our semi puritan culture will demand it.
Especially for the menfolk.
Sounds like early retirement !

Sounds like a meaningless existence!
UBI is fine as Milton told us as long as that is all.
Ironically, McD’s dropped IBM’s AI this week after it kept screwing up orders in their drive thrus. It was messing up 1 in 5 orders but IMO the mishaps going viral was the downfall.
Otherwise, the world is filled to the brim with people, very fast.
That's certainly a Far Left, Dictatorial, Prog Socialist thing to say.
I agree.
Let’s assume he’s correct. I call it the “Star Trek Economy*”.
Given what we’ve seen on Indian reservation, urban inner cities and now fly-over country about the effects of loss of jobs but supposedly solved by free money.
Our current social problems will pale into insignificance. It sounds trite and old fashioned but there’s something psychologically settling in the self-discipline of going to work. The leftists all think that freed from the “drudgery” of work we’ll all be artists - painters, poets, novelists. How’s that urban center Rap artistic thing working out?
* Why “Star Trek Economy”?
Did you ever see anyone in the Star Trek shows actually have a non-government job or any job?
That’s assuming they don’t enslave us in pods and place our minds in a fake reality like in “The Matrix” series.
Six says hi..
