MIAMI (AP) — Former President Donald Trump said in an interview posted on Thursday he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges, a sharp departure from the anti-immigrant rhetoric he typically uses on the campaign trail.
Trump was asked about plans for companies to be able to import the “best and brightest” in a podcast taped Wednesday with venture capitalists and tech investors called the “All-In.”
“What I want to do and what I will do is you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma a green card to be able to stay in this country. And that includes junior colleges too, anybody graduates from a college. You go there for two years or four years,” he said, vowing to address this concern on day one.

You can assured that us taxpayers are footing part of the bill too, can’t imagine a student getting through college and whatever university isn’t getting some kind of federal grants, $35 trillion in debt before the year is out and total collapse can’t be that far away.
I’d prefer they go back and make their own countries into prosperous and vibrant trading partners such that their fellow citizens don’t feel the need to leave and come here.
NO!!! They should not have been here to begin with, they were allowed a visa to be here to go to school, with the intent and promised to go home. That’s exactly what they should do. Go home or be deported.
And take the jobs of your kids, your neighbors kids, your community kids? That’s a nice citizen you are, giving up their jobs, their careers, their futures.
“I would rather give green cards to those who complete a trades apprenticeship program and a thorough background check.”
I see Hispanics doing most construction work except for land clearing, electrical, plumbing and HVAC.
These Hispanics seem to work efficiently and do a good job.
As for electrical, plumbing and HVAC, I would like to see servicemen at the end of long enlistments have a crack at these trades via paid tuition. Too many vets wind up homeless.
Last week he told a business roundtable of CEOs that he was going to not only continue H1B, but increase it. I’m really growing curious to see how he’s going to reconcile all of these pro immigration plans with his populous pro American, hire American pronouncements.
Terrible idea, as it rewards illegal behavior.
Enter the country illegally. Go to D state where they don’t check your papers when you enroll in a college. Graduate, and get a green card.
This sounds like a D idea, not a Trump idea. Don’t go all wobbly on us, Mr. Trump.
The only way I’d support this idea is if the foreign students take a vow of poverty and celibacy. Otherwise they will use their money to take over our country and bring in more of their own people. America is a nation not an economic zone.
They are only 10% American because American students pay less than four nationals, so the schools fill up their classes with foreign nationals. That needs to end, specially at state run schools. And any school receiving federal funds. There are plenty of qualified, interested, And able American kids for the seats in these colleges,
I didn’t like it when Mitt Romney proposed the same thing in 2012, either.
I don’t like the idea of ANYTHING being “automatically” given to foreigners. The only thing they’re entitled to is the degree, if they earned it.
“unvetted illegals”
The US needs to get out from under the Refugee Convention.
You know why.
We do not need them here. In fact, the more foreigners we get, the worse our country gets, as wages go down and opportunities dry up from dang DEI, which is used in all companies to beat down citizens who are fellow workers.
These H1-B holders go from programmer to manager, then become a citizen, cementing in hiring even more H1-Bs.
Your argument is in favor of what open borders bring. Cheap, cheap labor and a watering down of all that is good, as virtually none are Christians or have any way to value what life-long citizens value.
Make salaries matter, again.
These people water down the salaries, forcing changes in degrees.
You may want to see what passes for ‘education’ these days. As to who pays - the schools do just fine off of most Americans, given the loans, grants, and other crap given to them by multiple levels of government - the problem is that there are absolute standards in Engineering and when you ‘cheat’ to make crappy-educated Americans feel smart, airplanes crash and bridges fall down (as in Florida), so the schools have to either greatly shrink in size, or find students not subjected to American Purple-Haired ‘school teachers’.
“Make salaries matter, again. These people water down the salaries, forcing changes in degrees.”
Salaries are fine in engineering and for doctors, but still very few Americans - there’s more going on. I think it’s mostly due to having an K-12 education system that is the LAUGHING STOCK of the world. Until that gets cleaned up, limiting foreign students will do nothing but shrink our schools.
All US companies should realize that foreign STEM types generally dream of forming their own companies and becoming rich.
They have the language skills to function in their home country and their home country courts will ignore US patents to the maximum extent plausible.
Witness the textile industry in Pakistan set up by Pakistanis who emigrated to Great Britain in years past.
Witness the PC parts industry in Taiwan set up by Taiwanese who emigrated to the USA in years past.
It’s like saving 10% on labor today to lose everything in future years.
The only things that foreigners can’t steal is honesty.
Fix the schools, don’t see out our kids futures! Otherwise, we’ll find our kids simply scrambling with illegals for low paying jobs while the college-level jobs go t foreigners.
This is worrisome.
Must suppress wages on the American people. Don’t matter who is president. The can make this idiocy work in their minds.
