AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – Akron residents and even some elected officials are unhappy after Mayor Shammas Malik made the difficult decision to cancel all events on city property this weekend. A move, he said, to prevent any potential violent acts.
The decision to cancel was primed by a letter signed by eight Akron City Council members expressing grave concern for Juneteenth celebrations.
“I can only imagine the frustration of the organizers,” Mayor Malik said. “But when I get a letter like what I received, I have to take that seriously.”
In total, 11 weekend events were canceled. The top reason being the mass shooting on June 2 where 28 people were shot or grazed and one man died from his injuries. No one has been arrested yet and the investigation continues.
The mayor and Akron Police Department said no credible threats were made against any event this weekend, but still the decision to cancel was made from an abundance of caution.

It’s sad that they fear such violence at a Juneteenth celebration.
Who knew that a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation could provoke violence.
Very sad.
Akron used to be an important part of America, the Rubber Capital of the World. AA was founded there too.
One of the many problems we have in the country is people not parenting their children. There are so many people who have been allowed to go feral, and have no sense of decency.
The Akron mayor is a Dem, but at least he took a stand. He has a depleted police force because of his party’s insanity, and citizens who aren’t fit to be in civilized society.
Just one of a thousand American cities Democrats have turned into a toilet
No credible threat, just their disrespect and unwillingness to fulfill their public duties.
Shamass Malik???? There’s your problem in the rust belt. The most productive area of US mega manufacturing power— run to the ground by muzzie a@@holes who attack, and produce— nothing but more of... them!
It was an easy decision by Herr Mai—yor! Seig Hamas!!
Sad but accurate reflection of the “culture.” Can’t get together as a people to celebrate their being freed without winding up killing each other over slights and “disrespects.”
The collision of Father’s Day and Juneteenth is a cosmic joke.

“The collision of Father’s Day and Juneteenth is a cosmic joke.”
We have black history all through February, and now, with “Juneteenth”, (an offensive and stupid name), most of June is about blacks. Why not just rename to the Black States of America and have everyday be black something or another day?
Interesting that I've never heard of this incident.
It's just like we never hear about what's happening in Baltimore or Chicago. Just another day, you know.
I think you can figure out why.
WTF is a SHAMMAS MALIK???? STOP VOTING IN MUSLIMS!!!
There probably will only half the shootings if he let the “celebration” continue ... good move
“Very sad.”
It could be that your vision of “emancipation” and its effects were not in accord with the real world outcomes.
Conservatives should be realistic about human failings and shortcomings.
There are some days I long for the return of public hangings ... you'd only need a few. Looters, disruptive rabble rousers, arsonists, whatever.
Line them up and take them out, and publicize the hell out of it. This crap WILL stop.
General Order No. 3 by U.S. Major General Gordon Granger on June 19 (1865) was a cruel joke on former slaves and their descendants. The language used to address the freedmen was, and remains, problematic. I'm not sure why it continues to be celebrated. Maybe because few people ever read the text; maybe because somebody told some people they needed to celebrate it.
Per Major General Granger:
“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”
