Navy Capt. Michel Brandt has been relieved of command of the USS Somerset, an amphibious transport dock ship, the service announced Friday. Brandt was fired “due to a lack of confidence in her ability to lead the crew” by Rear Adm. Christopher Stone, commander of the Expeditionary Strike Group 7, according to the Navy statement. She was relieved Thursday.

A “lack of confidence” is often cited by the military when removing a commander. Brandt has commanded the ship since July 2023, according to the Navy. Capt. Tate Robinson was assigned to temporarily replace Brandt as commanding officer of the Somerset until a permanent commander is selected for the ship. Robinson is currently commodore of Amphibious Squadron 5 at Naval Base San Diego, the Navy said. Brandt has been assigned to administrative duties with the Pacific fleet’s Naval Surface Force commander. The USS Somerset’s homeport is listed as Naval Base San Diego. The Somerset has been operating in the Indo-Pacific region and took part in the Balikatan exercises in the Philippines in May, according to Lt. Grace Kording, public affairs officer with the Naval Surface Force at Naval Base San Diego The Navy offered no additional details about firing Brandt. Navy Capt. Michel Brandt was relieved as the commanding officer of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Somerset on June 6, 2024, service officials said. Navy Capt. Michel Brandt was relieved as the commanding officer of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Somerset on June 6, 2024, service officials said. (Evan Diaz/U.S. Navy) “Navy commanding officers are held to high standards of personal and professional conduct,” the Navy said in its statement. “They are expected to uphold the highest standards of responsibility, reliability and leadership, and the Navy holds them accountable when they fall short of those standards.” Brandt is a native of Oak Grove, Ky., according to her Navy profile. She graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1998 and was commissioned through the Navy ROTC program. Among her assignments, Brandt has served on the littoral combat ships USS Freedom and USS Fort Worth and as reactor officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.

This will be followed shortly by her announced retirement and hiring by Raytheon or Bath Shipworks; or one of the major defense consulting agencies.

The Peter Principle theorizes that employees in most organizational hierarchies automatically rise through promotion to higher positions. However, competent employees will be promoted, but will ultimately assume positions for which they are incompetent.

I don’t think so. What corporation would want to hire someone who was fired from the Navy for incompetence. I know I wouldn’t hire her.................

Just wait….

If you were to keep an eye on her, she will be scooped up within 6 months of retiring.

The MIC takes care of their own.

The Peter Principle theorizes that employees in most organizational hierarchies automatically rise through promotion to higher positions. However, competent employees will be promoted, but will ultimately assume positions for which they are incompetent.

The Peter Principle was superseded by the Dilbert Principle1 three decades ago.

1 Companies systematically promote their least-competent employees to management positions to limit the damage they can do, instead of putting them in positions where real work is done.
