‘One Attacker Took A Watch, The Other Took A Fist To The Face’: Rep. Collins Staffer Robbed At Gunpoint
Daily Caller ^ | June 09, 2024 | Hailey Gomez

Republican Georgia Rep. Mike Collins claimed Sunday afternoon that one of his staffers was robbed at gunpoint in Washington, D.C.

Collins took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and claimed a staffer on his team and a friend were allegedly robbed at gunpoint early Sunday by three men in the southeast neighborhood of Navy Yard. While the staffer and other individuals were not identified by Collins, the Republican congressman claimed one attacker had taken a watch while another was punched by one of the victims.

“Our nation’s capital has become a warzone because of pro-criminal policies peddled by D.C.’s government. Thank the good Lord, after fending off the assailants, both young men are safe,” Collins wrote.

Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officials confirmed the attack to The Daily Caller, stating that around 1:58 a.m. officials responded to a call for “the report of a robbery,” and that multiple suspects had been present, including one possessing a gun. Following the attack, the suspects fled by vehicle, police said, posting an image of the car and license plate to social media.

Data published by the MPD in January 2024 revealed Washington, D.C. experienced a 39% increase in violent crime in 2023. While the District contains the most police officers per capita in the country, overall crime had increased by 26% from 2022, with 34,414 instances of violent and property crime being reported to authorities, in addition to property crime rising by 24%.

A bill, Secure DC Omnibus, was introduced in January 2024 by D.C. Councilmember Brooke Pinto to increase gun crime penalties and add retail theft penalties, expand the definition of carjacking, allow for DNA sample collection from felony suspects and allow officers to designate high-crime areas drug-free zones.

Pinto stated at the time that the bill’s March 5, 2024 passing “sends the clear message that DC is united in its efforts to make meaningful and sustainable improvements to public safety for residents across the District.”

The Daily Caller reached out to Congressman Collins’s office for comment.

Congress should take back the governing of DC.

The people of DC obviously cannot govern themselves................

The Navy Yard area has undergone extensive renovation and gentrification so this is a little surprising. But criminals can cross neighborhoods - and go to where the good targets are.

Walking around SE DC at any time of the day is asking for it.

“... claimed one attacker had taken a watch while another was punched by one of the victims.”

~~~
Wait? This is confusing. By victims, do they mean that one of the staffers punched one of the attackers, even though they had a gun?
Who is the “victim”?
Or is the author suggesting that the “attackers” are also “victims”
Notice the language used here: Republican Georgia Rep. Mike Collins claimed Sunday afternoon that one of his staffers was robbed at gunpoint in Washington, D.C.
Later they at they confirmed the robbery with the police so what does it not say, that one of his staffers was robbed or just that the congressman said that his staffer was robbed.
To me claimed is implying that he is potentially lying.
Anacostia is about 2.5 miles from the Navy Yard. So, yes & no. It’s close but not adjacent to each other.
2.5 miles is nothing. I walk that every day.
In a speeding car at 2am it’s probably about 2.5 minutes................
The residential section of DC should be returned to MD. The rest should be stripped of the right to vote in presidential elections. Combined the Rats lose 3 EV for POTUS.
“Collins took to X (formerly known as Twitter)”
Good Gravy... Will writers ever cease using this little parenthetical explanation... it’s been X for a while, how about something like on X or On-x, or ONX
