Newsom proposes defunding police, prisons, public safety as California faces massive deficit

Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., proposed slashing budgets regarding public safety, such as prisons and law enforcement, as the state simultaneously grapples with a crippling deficit and doubles down on climate goals relating to equity.

The California Democrat's proposed budget, released in May, notes that "difficult decisions" are necessary to address the estimated $27.6 billion deficit, which is projected to continue for years to come. It includes a $97 million cut to trial court operations, $10 million to the Department of Justice's Division of Law Enforcement and more than $80 million to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

A Newsom spokesperson initially told Fox News Digital that there were "no cuts to law enforcement." (They lied)

"The budget proposes numerous ways to make government more efficient and reduce costs for taxpayers, including cuts on inmate spending. Since Governor Newsom took office in 2019, the state has made record investments in law enforcement, including $1.1 billion to tackle crime, support police, and hold criminals accountable," the spokesperson said.

How does this help Californians at all? I mean the ones that aren't criminals?

How about first cutting costs on illegal immigrant spending?

As long as there are no cuts to any of the freebies they are giving to the illegals...

Great idea! Shut down all law enforcement, and invite more “migrants” in.

I have a better idea. They’re all FOR PUBLIC SERVICE....go without paychecks until there is no longer a deficit to show they really mean “public service”! Put it on the ballot and see how it goes...

I watched Tucker’s interview with the ElSalvadore leader. He just had to give his opinions on the rail line being built in Calif.

As for the cops being defunded he’s do the same thing with the military if he was POTUS.

As a Californian I can attest that regular people are leaving this state on a daily basis. It is relentless. When I moved here 40 years ago California was the place to be. Not any more. Now it’s the place to leave. By the way, we used to have Republican Governors and Senators, etc… That doesn’t happen anymore.

It is what Leftist scumbags do everywhere.

Instead of cutting, say, benefits to illegal aliens or "Social Emotional Learning" in schools when they can't make budget and the citizens don't want their taxes raised, they THREATEN to cut police, firefighters, and other public safety related budget items.

All the time.

Every time.

I’m leaving California for Arkansas in July... already bought a house in the Arkansas River Valley. Aside from all the social unrest, it’s also incredibly expensive here. The house I bought in AR is half the price of the one I sold here so I’ll have a little cash in my pocket after the move.

Just release all the violent criminals and close the prisons, so the murders and rapists will have a chance to turn their lives around and be responsible citizens. Sure, why not?

This whole deficit thing - it won’t put a crimp in the plans to offer every “newcomer” free, fully-furnished homes and EV cars, will it?
