Imagine a world where gas stations are replaced by charging stations. Does that sound weird or cool? Well, that’s the future 12 U.S. states are hurtling towards by phasing out the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles.
California pioneered this ambitious plan to fight air pollution by encouraging residents to buy electric cars. A domino effect has begun following California’s lead, with 11 states lining up to follow suit.
In August 2022, California decided to ban the sales of gas-powered cars by 2035. It’s a big step in fighting climate change since ICEs constitute a significant cause of air pollution. However, the rule doesn’t apply to used cars, which can still be sold and bought.
The Advanced Clean Cars II regulation will kick in 2026 with a small percentage of new cars required to be electric and then increase each year until only zero-emission vehicles are sold in 2035. Whether this initiative will work hinges on the state’s ability to continue ramping up sales of Zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).

Californians will go buy their cars in Arizona and Nevada. California might be able to restrict the sale of something IN THE STATE but it cannot restrict residents of California from buying something out of state.
That broad a group would KILL the US economy even better than Bidenomics.

They'll tax the snot out of them and make it cost prohibitive to the point where the fees and taxes care more than the cost of the vehicle.
The previous assembly screwed virginia over when it was all democrat with a communist governor. They passed a law that said Virginia will do what ever California says. And the courts allowed it when challenged.
Virginia would be better served if it did what West Virginia did during the Civil War and those counties not near the Beltway secede and form another state.
Amen...or just give those counties back to DC like it was before the civil war.

People will buy those cars in other states.
I have no problem with electric cars so long as they are cost competitive with no goverment subsidy with my Ram 1500 internal combustion engine with 395 horsepower and can drive 500 miles on a tank of gas and recharge in 5 minutes like my Ram can with gasoline. Physics denies this possibility. At about 200 thousand miles my Ram will need an overhaul of its engine, about 9 thousand dollars. See below for a Ford Lighting.

Are they banning the sale of NEW gas-powered cars only? If so, USED gas-powered cars will be in hot demand.
I'm in 100% agreement. And don't get me started on an EV truck's range being severely limited when weighed down (i.e. used for actual pickup chores).

On this I have to disagree. At least if you include cars (not pickups), the various scenarios people use cars for, and cars not named "Tesla", some of which have cheaper battery replacement costs.
Here are some real world numbers for us. We've put 48K miles in a hair less than 2 years in our EV car (driving it a lot more than our gas pickup). In the past 12 months we drove it 24K miles, with 14K of them charged at home. (Don't even think about an EV unless you can set up charging at home and drive enough home charged miles for the gas savings and oil change savings to be worth the costs that come with an EV.) This means adding 4,191kWh to my power demand (which would have that much to my power bills if I didn't have most of my power provided homemade by solar, but that's another topic). So someone without solar, with my EV, and driving it the same amount and paying the same 16¢/kWh we pay for Alabama Power, it means adding $56/month to the power bill to drive almost 1,200 miles per month.
Long trips is when it's time to make a decision on if we take the EV car or the gas pickup. If I go by myself or if the trip involves pickup chores: gas pickup. If I go with my wife, who wants to stop every 200 miles for 10-15 minutes anyway and walk around LOL, and if it's on a trip full of many fast chargers, we'll take the EV car. Last year we drove the EV from Alabama to east Canada with nothing but fast charging stops (about 15 minutes each). But the eastern seaboard of the U.S. is densely populated and has many fast chargers. If we were driving through Wyoming or west Texas we'd probably take the gas pickup.

California already restricts its residents and business entities from registering or operating any diesel truck that is older than 2010 inside it’s borders. It doesn’t matter where you bought it or if you are trying to import it. They will not issue a title, plates or inspections for it. Without of state plates it is not allowed to operate for profit and most be removed from the state or crushed or it’s engine updated to a 2010 engine with 2010 or later emissions control. This law has already withstood Fedgov scrutiny so it stands as is. So no California absolutely will not allow out of state purchases to be on it’s roads even with out of state plates operated by a citizen of California. It’s already a crime to not register a vehicle in 30 days after bringing it into California by a California citizen. The vehicle can be impounded after the second violation and the person’s driver’s license suspended if they rack up enough points by citations. Both of those less would need to changed at the governors level or a veto proof referendum.
