Breaking with the stance of other Western countries, Israel decided on Monday not to express an official opinion on the issue of Catalan independence in the meantime, NRG reported.
According to the report, Spain asked Israel over the weekend to publicly declare that it does not support Catalan independence, as part of Spain’s efforts to garner international consensus on the matter.
Israel’s ambivalence is a departure from the opposition to Catalan independence declared by the EU and US. On Friday, US State Dept. spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement that “Catalonia is an integral part of Spain, and the United States supports the Spanish government’s constitutional measures to keep Spain strong and united.”
According to NRG, the reasons for Israel’s move are twofold: First, Catalonia is seen as a pro-Israel region, with Israeli flags a common sight on Catalan homes - notwithstanding the Barcelona municipality’s recent adoption of BDS measures.
Second, Israel is fed up with Spain’s anti-Israel stance of many years. This attitude was manifested in comments made by Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben-Dahan during the Spanish crackdown on the Catalan referendum: “For many years, Spain lectured us about how we need to give [national] rights to the Palestinian Arabs,” wrote Ben-Dahan on Twitter. “Today we see their hypocrisy, as [Spain] doesn’t even allow the Catalans to hold a referendum on independence.”

Catalonia is a snake pit of antisemitism.
The people of Catalonia have the right to vote in Spanish elections. Perhaps Israel should allow the people of the West Bank and Gaza to vote in Israeli elections.
On a happy note, while the acid reflux has me up at 2:33 A.M. on an IDF base in the Negev, Israel, there is the soothing sound of 250 lb. JDAMs in the distance pounding ham ass in Gaza.
Payback. Good!
The irony is the strongest opponent of Catalan independence are the conservatives in Spain. It is the Catalan votes which keep the Socialists in power.
So why is Catalonia part of Spain, but Kosovo not part of Serbia.
Oh yeah, it’s that “Rules based International Order”...you know, where the dictators in DC and Brussels set whatever changing ‘rules’ they wish.
Who would assume what percentage of the national debt. The bonds will not pay themselves.
What goes around comes around, suckers
It’s a shame. There are some beautiful areas of Catalonia. Tarragona is a stunning town with gorgeous beaches. And yet Catalonia has been a bastion of leftism for more than 100 years. Taxes are outrageous there, I understand.
Barcelona is the only city in Spain where I see a level of drug use and crazy street people approaching the levels of an American city.
It’s a weird thing. Catalonia has long been one of the richest areas of Spain, and yet it’s also one of the most left-wing. In all these respects, it reminds me of San Francisco... though it’s doing much better than SF in terms of attracting tourtists.
Unfortunately, if that's the case then it's Spain getting payback. This article is almost 4 years old.
Not according to this article.
Perhaps not.
Ever.
Perhaps you should go to to be a poll worker in Gaza, perhaps
Wadda dumbazz comment by you
The people of Catalonia do not have a homicidal hatred of Spain and Spaniards, nor a desire to destroy Spain utterly and loot the desolation.
But, since we’re talking about Palestine and Gaza, both have the right to vote in their local elections, and Jerusalem Arabs have a right to Israeli citizenship if they request it and have a clean record, and thereby can vote in national elections as well, if they want to take that step. Arabs living within the green line are full-fledged citizens in every respect, whether Moslem, Druze, Samaritans, Bedouins, or Christians. Many of them serve in the IDF and other Israeli security forces. 20% of Israeli citizens are Moslems.
One time in Nahariya, I heard artillery reports so heavy they shook our apartment walls. Since there were no sirens sounding, I thought it was our artillery battery pounding Hizbollah in Lebanon. It turned out it was incoming from Lebanon, but the sirens had been rendered kaput somehow.

This morning, Spain (and Norway and Ireland) formalized recognition of the nation state of Palestine, as they announced last week that they would do.
From Sagrada Familia to the Sea
Barcelona will be free
Israel should demand the “right of return” of “Moorish refugees” and call for UNRWA tents to be setup in Spanish areas of Morocco (Ceuta and Melilla) until a “two-state solution” can be established in Spain.
