Theater apologizes to patrons following a controversial appearance by Oscar-winner Richard Dreyfuss - 12 months after he said the Academy's DEI rules made him 'want to vomit'

A theater in Massachusetts issued an apology to customers following an appearance by Richard Dreyfuss on Saturday night which caused many to boo the Oscar-winner while many walked out on the performance. Dreyfuss, 78, was appearing at The Cabot in Beverly, Massachusetts, for a question and answer session followed by a screening of Jaws, the mega hit which launched his career in 1975.

Dreyfuss is accused of making derogatory remarks about members of the LGBTQ community, women in Hollywood as well as his collaborators. 'We deeply regret that Mr. Dreyfuss's comments during the event were not in line with the values of inclusivity we uphold at The Cabot,' the press release began. We understand that his remarks were distressing and offensive to many of our community members, and for that, we sincerely apologize.' 'At The Cabot, we are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of our community. The views expressed by Mr. Dreyfuss do not reflect our beliefs, and we do not endorse them in any way.'

This is in my city. The Cabot is a longstanding theatre which for many years had Le Grand David's magic show. Saw revival showings of Jaws and The Shining (but was not at this show; the Jaws showing years ago had a tie in with Narragansett beer, which Robert Shaw's character was seen drinking)

“At The Cabot, we are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of our community”

Welcoming and inclusive...except for differing views.

From article, one comment that was posted on Facebook:
>> ‘Wow. He was awful. Sexist, mean, arrogant. I walked out as did many others even before the Jaws screening. Awful.’

Did they demand and get a refund? His remarks were before the movie was shown. A brief night out for some...

They make up what people said. He didn’t like DEI rules. That is not the same as saying derogatory comments about lgbt people. They lie.

Who dragged the complainers to see Dreyfus? Was attendance mandatory so they had to sit through his presentation? I don’t understand how these people think - if you don’t like what someone says (or said a year ago), either don’t go to hear them speak or challenge them at question time. Otherwise, stay home until another event where you agree with every word the speaker has ever said so that you end up hearing unintelligent nincompoops like Robert DeNiro.

"Except for anyone who disagrees with us, of course."

If you read the article you see that Dreyfuss made no comments about gays or any group. He just defended free speech. In other words he spoke like a typical liberal of the 70s and 80s.

But that not good enough for these politically correct fascists.

OK. But I fail to see the problem. What exactly was the audience upset about?

This is from 12 months ago, on PBS:

Host Margaret Hoover asked Dreyfuss what he thought about the incoming inclusivity rules and he replied: ‘They make me vomit.

‘No one should be telling me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest, most current idea of what morality is. What are we risking? Are we really risking hurting people’s feelings?

‘You can’t legislate that. You have to let life be life and I’m sorry, I don’t think there is a minority or majority in the country that has to be catered to like that... This is an art form. It’s also a form of commerce, and it makes money, but it’s an art.

‘And no one should be telling me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest, most current idea of what morality is.’

You have to support the narratives or face the consequences

“...followed by a screening of Jaws, the mega hit which launched his career in 1975.”

The career of Richard Dreyfus was very arguably launched with his role in the “mega hit” American Graffiti 2 years earlier in 1973.

Stopped reading right there. An author that is so brazenly factually compromised in the first sentence has likely written an entire article of fantasy.
