The US has been outclassed by its rivals, such as Russia, in its capacity to remotely take out enemy weapons using jamming technology, according to former US military officials.
Mike Nagata, a retired US Army lieutenant general who led special operations in the Middle East, said that the US is "still falling behind" in its electronic warfare capabilities, reported Defense One.
Electronic warfare units, which use electronic signals to remotely scramble the GPS coordinates used to guide weapons, have played a key role in Russia's war in Ukraine.
"The gap between where the United States should be and where we are, in my judgment, continues to expand not everywhere, but in far too many places," Nagata reportedly said at the SOF Week conference in Tampa, Florida. He called on the US to get more creative to regain its dominance in electronic warfare.
Two retired special operations personnel singled out Russia in remarks to the publication. They said that one reason the Kremlin's technology is significantly better, is because it ignored international laws designed to stop jamming of civilian telecommunications.
It had also invested in electromagnetic innovation for decades while the US had focused its jamming technology on gathering intelligence in areas such as the Middle, according to the publication.
Russia has repeatedly used its electronic warfare units to disable expensive precision-guided weapons that the US has given its ally Ukraine in its battle against Russia.
According to reports, they've proven effective in sending GPS-guided Excalibur artillery rounds off course. They have also been effective against the JDAM US-made missiles used by Ukraine's air force, as well as the rockets fired by US-made Himars missile systems.
Last year, Ukraine's outgoing senior commander, Valery Zaluzhnyi, in an interview with The Economist, said Russia's electronic warfare capability had given it an important edge.

They need it more than we do.
Why worry? Our parasitic Military (non)Industrial Complex can even the playing field with only a million-kajillion dollars. We will have our resident MIC acolyte Chad C. Mulligan run it - into the ground for some fat stacks.
We’ve seen from this conflict that a lot of our defense budget is being wasted. We blow huge amounts on DEI programs, fancy gold plated weapons systems that ain’t all that when the shooting starts and doubtless other boondoggles.
Meanwhile we lack jamming, hypersonic missiles, surge capacity (shocking that Russia is easily outproducing the entire west in artillery shells, anti-tank missiles, etc etc, and we don’t have anywhere near enough frigates and destroyers in the navy.
We need to massively reallocate resources toward plugging these gaps and others like chip production, rare earths, electronics components, shipyards, etc. That will mean a lot of contractors need to be thrown out of their jobs and a lot of companies that produce weapons need to make the less sexy, less glamorous and no doubt lower margin meat and potatoes things that win actual wars against peer competitors.
That's a racist statement.
Our jamming technology was created by a diverse group of DEI scientists from Harvard and Columbia, each of whom got a coveted participation trophy just for showing up for work each day.
And most importantly, each scientist's work was equal to that of every other scientist working on the project...and no one's feelings got hurt.
Our military leadership is busy doubling down on transinclusivity.

Similar to the USA in the 20th century, The United Kingdom spent nearly 100 years after the Napoleonic Wars fighting small wars of empire, trade and banking against backward African and Asian peoples.
While on paper the UK planned and trained to fight rising powers like Russia, and then Germany, in reality, its society and government were hardly prepared for the reality and horrors of WWI.
It marked the beginning of the end for the empire and a transfer of global power to the USA.

We need to build more drones. We should be building motherships to host drones.
Aircraft carriers are already obsolete. We're building USS John F. Kennedy. It costs $12.8 billion.
The problem with that is Iran could build 1,000 drones to overwhelm one of our aircraft carriers and we cannot shoot down all the drones.
But but inventory is a waste of money. We need to stick with Just In Time and get contractors to build new ships in under a week.

And why would that be?
Look at the results, a bunch of goat herders wearing flip flops aka Houthis using drones and missiles supplied by Iran have basically shutdown shipping in the Red Sea.
Our only answer is shooting a couple million-dollar missiles at a $20,000 or less drone, the asymmetry of that kind of warfare doesn’t add up for long.
We are to invested in the next billion dollar wonder weapon that will get overwhelmed by a bunch of cheaper alternatives that can be easily made and are effective.
