Drones Have Offered Last Line of Defense for a Strategic Ukrainian Town
The New York Times ^ | May 25, 2024 | Carlotta Gall and Vladyslav Golovin

The commander stepped over boxes stacked full of plastic drones and opened the lid on a new delivery. Inside lay the light-gray fins of a mini plane, the latest addition to his arsenal of crewless aerial vehicles for fighting the Russian army.

The 33-year-old leader of what an internal report declared Ukrainian army’s best-performing drone unit, Senior Lt. Yuriy Fedorenko — popularly known by his call sign, Achilles — has been the main constraint on the Russian attempt to seize the strategic town of Chasiv Yar on Ukraine’s teetering eastern front.

For months, his drone teams, part of the 92nd Assault Brigade, have been filling a gap for other units of the army that have struggled with a shortage of troops and ammunition. The teams work day and night attacking Russian armor, dropping explosives on Russian positions and using their drones to ferry supplies to Ukrainian soldiers along the front line.

For the Ukrainians, holding Chasiv Yar is critical. Set on a ridge, 5 miles west of the destroyed city of Bakhmut, the town commands the heights above a crescent of industrial cities and villages that are home to roughly 200,000 residents.

Chasiv Yar is the gateway to the last part of the Donetsk region that is still in Ukrainian hands. If Russian forces were to capture the town, they would have the whole of the larger eastern area known as the Donbas within their grasp, long a goal of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s.

Chasiv Yar is in fact the key to all Ukraine. Zelensky totally misunderstood the Russian feint from the north. Because Zelensky called the shots, Ukraine will lose over 80 towns in South and East Ukraine, because he pulled units to defend Harkiev. It is now evident Russia was only creating a buffer zone in the North and that small offensive is turning into defensive lines. However, the real damage Russia infected was the weakening of all South and East defenses.

Chasiv Yar will soon fall. Like in the North there is nothing behind Chasiv Yar where the Russian military can be stopped.

Just like WWIIs other famous Nazi wartime leader, Zelensky has fallen for political reasons to protect Ukraine’s second largest city, at the expense of the rest of the country.

The US is advocating for deep strikes into Russia against their nuclear triaid.

I will not be surprised when, not if, Russia makes good on her warnings to use low radiation tactical nuclear weapons on French and British missile forces in Ukraine. I would not be surprised if the first F16 taking off from Germany or Romania didn’t result in a tactical nuclear strike on the airbase. If it lands somewhere else then there too.

Keep using Ukraine to attack Strategic Nuclear Forces of Russia under the presence it is Ukraine alone doing this will result in a massive NATO defeat in Ukraine, one which I doubt will not be limited to only NATO in Ukraine but elsewhere.

When Russia says it has been in a war against the west for its survival History may well record two illegimate president’s in the US and Ukraine started WWIII.

Oh yeah, Russia has almost caught up with Ukraine’s early lead in drone warfare. NATO and Ukrainian assessments predicted in May that Russian drones will, by July, reduce Russian infantry requirements by up to 90% in offensive close combat assaults. July is also the time when another 250k soldiers join in Ukraine, and if that wasn’t enough Washington will see 20,000 Russians in Africa, and 30,000 Russian soldiers in Syria.

Biden, Sullivan and Blinken are absolutely amazing the stupidest Americans ever to hold their jobs. It must be by design they all serve together.

Russian troops are still 3 km from the outskirts of Chasiv Yar.

What is a "low-radiation" tactical nuke? Nukes have the same fallout, the only difference is size, there's not low-radiation versions of them. And Russia might hit UK/Frogs in Ukraine, and that'd be justifiable (even though we left their guys alone in Vietnam), but if they actually hit Germany or Romania, you bet everyone else would move to kick Russia's ass. Even if NATO's defense treaty isn't invoked, at least several countries would go hot against Russia. And Russia has no chance there, they can't even beat just Ukraine, outside of long attrition warfare.

Massive NATO defeat? Outside of Ukraine? How do you figure that? Russia has trouble conducting operations and supporting logistics right next to her border, much less a country or two away. Russia's navy is crap, although the icebreakers are pretty good. Russia's lost how many ships to a rogtag bunch of Ukrainians? What are the rest gonna do against an actual navy?

And all this doesn't even include these US. If we get involved, how is Russia possibly gonna fight a two-front war? They don't have anything in the Pacific, at best a speedbump or two and that's it. Russia's only chance is if Iran, China, and all the illegals get involved also. Still not gonna win, but they'd at least last a decent bit longer.

The US is pridefully corrupt u der Biden and associates. They have given orders to attack Russia. When Russia lights up a few NATO bases, or some third world proxy hits a US overseas base with Russia missile, can Biden blame Russia? France has been run out of two African counties this year, as well as the US. The global miscalculation by the US leadership should terrify normal people.

The days of the US defending NATO counties after we provoke a Russian retaliation are over. If Russia took out a couple NATO bases that are supporting Ukraine directly, the Pentagon is not going to risk an attack on the US over it.

The US is too greedy and selfish to risk itself for competitors in Europe.

Besides, Biden and Blinken have pissed China off and might have to fight that two front war you raised Russia might face.

Or Iran, N.Korea, or even Pakistan might all want to join in a front against US stipidity.
