Ukrainian attack on annexed Crimea using U.S.-supplied missiles is reported to have struck a space radar station used by occupying Russian forces.

The local Crimean Wind Telegram channel reported on Friday that Kyiv's forces attacked military installations in Crimea on Thursday evening.

At least six ATACMS ballistic missiles hit a communications center used by the Russian army that houses "a radio antenna of a space observation station," it said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has contacted Russia's Defense Ministry for comment by email.

According to the Military Summary Channel, this was hit along with another space radar facility in southern Russia. According to MSC, these radars were part of Russia’s early nuclear warning system. If this is true, this is the most reckless escalation of all. The nightmare scenario just won’t go away.

Impossible

110% of all incoming missiles are always shot down by Glorious Russian Air Defenses

Go ahead, show us one time Russia has ever admitted a Ukrainian missile or drone successfully reached its target!

Couldn’t have happened without direct NATO recon and targeting, and likely operation of the missile system to strike at a nuke early warning radar system.

Cold War antiquary curiosity.

Not much tactical use, except perhaps as communications transmitter. A network of such radars gives them surveillance of satellites whose orbits are not published in unclassified material.

If it even works. Ground view of the site:

If it’s not much use, why waste the missiles on it? Any idea why they would attack that particular site?

What would it take to force Russia to abandon Crimea? Too many civilian Russian casualties,?

It would take a lot.

“The Russian establishment, and most ordinary Russians, for their part believe that holding Crimea is vital to Russian identity and Russia’s position as a great power. As a Russian liberal acquaintance (and no admirer of Putin) told me, “In the last resort, America would use nuclear weapons to save Hawaii and Pearl Harbor, and if we have to, we should use them to save Crimea.”

Tell Russia to leave Crimea.

When Ukraine was formed in 1991, Crimea was a "special autonomous region." It's written in their constitution. Ukraine broke that deal too.

It will take a lot. Crimea has been Russian since Catherine the Great seized it from the Ottoman Empire in 1783 during the Crimean War.

When I visited Sevastopol in January 2014, I saw about a hundred Russian flags and zero Ukrainian flags.
