Shock study shows how 42M recipients spend their food stamps - and they're not buying broccoli

An alarming study has spotlighted how 42 million food stamp recipients spend their welfare handouts on ultra-processed junk food.

Coca-Cola, Sprite and other soft drinks are the most commonly-bought items via the $135 billion-a-year Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a new study says.

Candy, potato chips, frozen pizza, ice cream, cookies, and other ultra-processed food dominates the top 20 items, says a report from the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC).

Report author Matthew Dickerson says recipients spend 'spend significant portions of their allotments on junk food.'

These 'non-nutritious foods' include 'sugary beverages and ultra-processed foods, which can lead to poor health,' says the 35-page study.

The prevalence of junk food is another reason to trim SNAP, which has ballooned this century and gets recipients hooked on handouts, says Dickerson.

The research comes as Washington lawmakers debate the text of an updated farm bill, with Republicans gunning to cut some $27 billion worth of nutrition program funding over 10 years

Nope-white rice has a mere 9% protein per serving-and it is nearly 89% carbs-all starch, and less than 10% of any useful nutrients. A serving of pinto beans has 45 gms, of plant based carbs-no starch-and 15 gms of protein, plus thiamine and several other useful nutrients. White rice does not add any useful nutrition to beans-just carbs. That is from the handout the local gym has on the front desk...

Mostly bottled water is waste but in some places it is prudent to buy some to keep water in stock at the house for emergencies.

Some people are probably also trying to drink more healthily and bottled water is easier to think of as a replacement beverage when trying to reduce on sodas and sugar drinks, it is also easier for taking along on the bus and the day.

Personally I can keep up with carrying my own tap water, but again, a lot of people on SNAP are not the most disciplined and detail oriented among us.

So SNAP is a subsidy to the junk food industry. I presume the contribute heavily to candidates for public office who in their view will best serve the good of the United States.

40 years ago, my first husband, who worked for a federal housing development, would sometimes bring home expensive frozen vegetables and other foods, which he fished out of the dumpster at the project office. Green Giant would donate large amounts of food to the projects. The residents who were responsible to distribute it there, would throw it in the dumpster. When asked why, they told him, “We don’t eat that kind of stuff”.

I have to disagree. White rice has fewer nutrients in general than whole (brown) rice, but when added to a diet containing beans, lentils, etc., it provides complete protein. In fact, research has shown that one doesn’t even need to eat them at the same meal, to acquire all of the amino acids in one’s diet.

(Another great plant source that does provide complete protein in itself, is the amaranth Quinoa. Some US farmers began growing this decades ago. You can make a really good Tabbouli from Quinoa.)

I propose what used to be done, instead of just giving an EBT card to anyone who whines enough-before Obama was pres-every case worker/case manager was required to actually check out whether a person really was disabled/unable to work forever or temporarily, what their sources of income-if any-were, etc before they were approved for assistance. That is no longer done most of the time hence you have scammers and drug addicts getting benefits who should either be in rehab or at work.

I’m over 70-I have a military survivor income as well as managing a business that makes some money, I’m healthy and non-disabled, so I obviously do not need benefits and should not get them. If a person my age can’t work and has less than enough to live on and is not a veteran eligible for VA assistance-the amount varies-then they certainly should and do get benefits-that is who those benefits are really for-they are not for the scammers and welfare queens getting them. Maybe I sound mean-but I’ve worked with comp clients, disability and assistance issues for about 30 years-and i can say that only about half the people who ask for food assistance really need/deserve those benefits...

We can’t drink tap water where we live. We filter our water with a zero water unit. We do use tap water to rinse fruits and vegetables, but that’s a negligible amount. Really, I should decant filtered water into a basin and wash all my fruits and vegetables en masse, when I bring them home, but I don’t. We do buy bottled water to keep, if needed, and in the car.

We don’t need a study. Anyone who is behind them in a store knows what they buy with SNAP benefits. They will pay the grocery store price of a 2 liter drink for a small 20 oz cola, the price of a full bag of chips for a small bag, and $2.50 for a small candy bar. And, that’s usually just for the toddler in the family.

At the grocery store, they fill a large cart and buy cases of soft drinks, junk food, and then high dollar meats. They skip the fresh fruit and veggie aisle completely.

I seethe as I stand behind them with my smaller cart of $75.00 worth of groceries that I’ve carefully picked out to last as long as possible. The cola and junk food companies lobby hard to make sure their items aren’t removed from the list of SNAP approved products.

I am on food stamps....I think that if the government is going to pay your food bill then government having a say in what is purchased is important...We don’t need the government paying for little Debie snacks at the seven eleven. We need just rice and beans along with some of the verry basics from a grocery store that is the lowest in price for the area.

The reason those that live in the projects can afford such nice new vehicles is that their rent is paid, their utilities are paid, their groceries are paid—all by the taxpayers. They have plenty of funds left from the benefits to pay a car payment for a new car, get their nails done, and get their pink hair weave.

The reason they opened it up to junk food was the sob story kids couldn’t get a cake for their birthday. So instead of allowing a certain number of cakes a year, they dropped all restrictions. Stupid.

Even such seemingly healthy items as baked breads and lunch meat often contain dangerous dyes and preservatives

Poor people make bologna sandwiches on cheap bread. The horror.

You could not pay me to eat white rice or anything else bleached/processed-brown rice is healthy, and actually has flavor. Quinoa and all that is fine-but you have to have fresh veggies and fruits to have healthy, complete nutrition if you are a vegan-there are a few vegans living out here-they do not eat white rice or white bread because the nutrients are bleached away.

I’m not a vegan-neither are most people-our main source of protein is meat/fish-meat protein is brain food, too-supplement that with plenty of fresh veggies, add some fresh fruit, some real cheese, butter and yogurt-and you have a diet of tasty food that is healthy and you will maintain a good weight, have plenty of energy, etc. I committed to an organic non-GMO paleo-type diet many decades ago-I do not eat any processed food at all-I might if I were starving, but that has never happened...

Well, I have the ‘prepper’ mentality. Most of us are concerned with - and prepare - as to how we’d survive in dire circumstances; especially if we live in urban and suburban environments. Protein combination is part of that. (Brown rice doesn’t last long and remain healthy in long-term storage; neither does whole grain flour, unless you store it as berries.) And I never said that we don’t need other types of food than what’s available from grasses and grains.

Anyway, Good Luck with remaining ‘pure’ if everything around you goes to hell.

Adding bread to a meal of beans makes a complete protein, with whole grain breads supplying the most. Cornbread, oats whole wheat breads, etc. White bread will do, but it is low in the amino acid that is missing from beans. Somehow, American Indians figured this out with “the 3 Sisters” -— corn, beans and squash.
