Sen. JD Vance’s (R-Ohio) surprise appearance at a Manhattan courthouse to support former President Trump, and his qualified answer about supporting the results of the 2024 election, show he’s challenging Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) as the Senate front-runner to be Trump’s running mate in the fall.
GOP senators and strategists say it’s hard to predict whom Trump will choose, but they say Scott and Vance are viewed as the two most likely choices within the Senate GOP conference.
Vance and Scott are stepping up their efforts to grab Trump’s attention by staying close to his orbit and showing off their skills and loyalty.
Vance showed up Monday in Lower Manhattan to rip District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D) prosecution of Trump as politically motivated and pan the judge’s handling of the trial as a “disgrace.”
He told Fox News host Martha MacCallum on Tuesday that he was there “to support a friend,” calling it a “very depressing way to spend five, six weeks of your life when you know that you’re innocent.”
He will also attend an intimate, high-dollar fundraiser with Trump in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Guests are being asked to contribute $50,000 per person to a joint fundraising committee for the occasion.

Vance is actually a conservative with high scores so I hope these reports are true.
less so Tim Scott.
Ditto that.
In this election it is critical to look at the VP candidates on both sides because it would be a good bet that they will be President before the term is over. 80+ year old men have a pretty high likelihood of death over the next four years. It is much higher than zero (It’s about 10% per year.)
Vance seems like a smart guy. Scott always struck me as a little dim.
No No No to Tim Scott. He has stabbed Trump in the back before. He is McConnell’s way into the Trump Presidency to cause mischief. He isn’t liked by black people either.
JD is a good choice.
Vance is also from an important state
He’s got to be high on the list
Vance-too valuable where he is. In the senate he can speak out more.
Would you want Governor DeWine picking his replacement and putting the seat in jeopardy in the next statewide election?
Every time Tim Scott talks I feel like I have to clear my throat.
I agree.
I think Burgum will be the new Pence.
Looking at the betting odds it’s a 3-way race between Burgum, Vance and Scott who all top the market
By far the best choice is Vance. My money is on Tulsi but that looks very optimistic
Actually Trump should pick a regular person as a VP, not some congressional twit that will likely be like Pence in the end.
This is an issue a scramble in the senate if victorious
Hmm...
It’s clearly not hurting his chances if he’s attending these fundraisers for Trump.
He’s in contention.
I don’t know enough about either man, especially Scott. I’ve liked what I’ve heard from Vance so far.
Burgam-red state governor. No heavy lifting there. If it’s gonna be a white guy he’s gotta excite the base with ‘28 in mind.
Exactly. Vance is smarter and far more articulate than Tim. Byron Donalds towers over Tim, for that matter.
Scott? No, thanks.
It would be nice to have a running mate who can carry on MAGA in 2028 and beyond.
But such person if he or she exists doesn’t seem to be on anyone’s radar.
I would agree that the running mate doesn’t necessarily have to be someone who is in elective office right now. Although historically running mates are going to be someone who is in the political world.
Which one is the better attack dog?
Trump should take Scott and Bergum into his cabinet if possible. Anything he can announce favorably prior to voting would be smart.
Vance will be even more valuable as VP or President. DeSwine having to pick a successor is the only downside that I can see.
Dittos!!!! DeWine would pick a RINO just like him.
