California Lawmaker Introduces Bill Banning Excessive Homework: ‘Homework Is Exhausting’

A lawmaker in California introduced a bill that would ban teachers from being able to assign students an excessive amount of homework.

California State Assembly member Pilar Schiavo (D) introduced The Healthy Homework Act, also known as AB 2999, in February, noting in an interview with Fox40 that it would have a “huge impact” on the students.

Under AB 2999, educational agencies, local school board officials, and school administration officials would need to “develop, adopt, and update” homework policies “at least once every five years,” and take into account research available regarding the impacts of homework on students’ physical and mental health.

This is from the “excessive homework” clause of the US Constitution.

Fitting, no Algebra, no homework, anything that might upset their day is racist. They won’t know how to read, to any math, nothing. Dumbing down American youth is okay since we are bring in tens of millions to replace them.

Not really. Much homework these days is busy work. Studying is different, and if students and parents care about getting the most out of school time will be set aside for that.

Does it require a state wide ban. Nope. Any homework policy should be a decision by the school district with input from parents.

There is a surfeit of useless homework. There are students who need more homework. Those things said, doing it at the state level is not likely to be at all helpful. Probably not even if the state was Wyoming.

Dumbing down American youth

It's been happening for decades. Exception-if you're from an Asian or Jewish family.

Schools have 6 or 7 hours per day to educate students. If that’s not enough time, get better teachers.

It’s easier to indoctrinate and control a populace that’s uneducated…especially if they think they are educated.

I just spent 3 hours doing 20 minutes of Math homework with my daughter, very stressful on me not to slap her after the 10th time I told her the same thing. And this is only 4th grade math.

No I don’t blame the school, teacher or program. I am actually mostly content with the instruction. But even my wife that said I too hard on the daughter could recite what I was telling the daughter for the 20+ time.

So far the only issue I have with her math is them saying use a picture to figure your answer. I haven’t come to enlightenment with that as I only have a BS in Math.

I taught Jr High history for decades. I gave a lot of homework. Some kids and parents weren’t happy about it. But homework is more like ‘real life’ than tests are when you think about it. There are certain things that just have to get don. The fact is, ‘better teachers’ tend to be the ones who give homework.

But in any case, contrast the idea of this law with how schools work in Japan. First of all, their school year is 240 days vs 180 days in the U.S. They go to school 5 1/2 days per week. And after school, most kids go to what are called ‘cram’ schools so that they can get into good high schools. Cram schools are at least a couple of hours in the evening and they too give out homework.

When they get home, they work on homework. They saying goes something like this, “Going to bed before midnight leads to failure”.

Am I advocating such a regime for American kids? Absolutely not. Completely different cultures. But the trend should be to require more of our students rather than less.

The movie ‘Idiocracy’ was not meant to be a guidebook.

What they need to pass is a bill saying “toughen up, sunshine, and stop acting up and out”.
