College protesters seek amnesty to keep arrests and suspensions from trailing them
Associated Press ^ | April 28, 2024 | Jocelyn Gecker

Maryam Alwan figured the worst was over after New York City police in riot gear arrested her and other protesters on the Columbia University campus, loaded them onto buses and held them in custody for hours.

But the next evening, the college junior received an email from the university. Alwan and other students were being suspended after their arrests at the “ Gaza Solidarity Encampment,” a tactic colleges across the country have deployed to calm growing campus protests against the Israel-Hamas war.

The students’ plight has become a central part of protests, with students and a growing number of faculty demanding their amnesty. At issue is whether universities and law enforcement will clear the charges and withhold other consequences, or whether the suspensions and legal records will follow students into their adult lives.

Terms of the suspensions vary from campus to campus. At Columbia and its affiliated Barnard College for women, Alwan and dozens more were arrested April 18 and promptly barred from campus and classes, unable to attend in-person or virtually, and banned from dining halls.

Questions about their academic futures remain. Will they be allowed to take final exams? What about financial aid? Graduation? Columbia says outcomes will be decided at disciplinary hearings, but Alwan says she has not been given a date.

“This feels very dystopian,” said Alwan, a comparative literature and society major.

whether the suspensions and legal records will follow students into their adult lives.

It should be on their record. So when they apply for jobs working in D.C. for a cushy federal job, they should have to explain themselves that they've gotten themselves arrested at a pro-hamas protest at their university.

If anyone asks, just tell them you didn’t really mean it. Or got caught up in the moment. Or your professors encouraged you. Or something. Never, ever admit you were wrong.

Freedom of speech does not also include freedom from the consequences of speaking.

Freedom is not free. There is a price, often a very heavy price.

So you're an idiot. Maybe it'll work if you're getting hired by Harvard.

Actions have consequences, they just threw away their college career, and if here on a visa, should be deported immediately.

Miss Alwan is about to find out she has more problems than just an arrest record. Embrace the suck, you moron.

“...the suspensions and legal records will follow students into their adult lives...”

Nearly all college students are adults and should have the face the consequence of their adult misbehavior.

They have to be. If admitted as an F-1 student and they are not attending class they are a non-immigrant out of status and subject to removal.

Students were arrested protesting the war in Vietnam, and against Apartheid, and there were no long term consequences.

That’s why we have this behavior now! There were no consequences!

Sad thing is that many if not most of the leaders are not students. They are outside agitators, most likely in the pay of Soros, (although one mustn't ignore the GRU). These kids are being suckered, just as my generation was whipped into a frenzy to oppose the Vietnam War. (I remember...I was there).

“a comparative literature and society major.”

What kind of degree is that? Is she going to get a job to pay off those student loans?

They should all be permanently expelled and then sent to Gaza for 6 months minimum, NO Amnesty of any kind and this should haunt them for the rest of their miserable pathetic lives.

Interesting.

Depending on the school, expulsion, suspension, etc mean different things.

Expulsions pretty much follow you for good. Even if you get another College to admit you, you still have to get your official academic transcript from the place that expelled you. It can be very difficult if the transcript withholding is due to non-financial reasons. And in any case, your official transcript would note expulsion.
