Why Progressives Refuse to Support School Protectors
AmmoLand ^ | April 25, 2024 | Dean Weingarten

The other day, I was speaking to an Australian, attempting to explain to him how American Progressives view simple solutions to rampage school shootings, such as allowing armed military and police veterans to protect schools, as they do in Israel, to be “Off the table.”

This hypothetical exchange between a “Naive Progressive” and an “Old Hand Progressive” was the result:

Naive Progressive:

I am concerned about Trump talking about allowing teachers with police and military experience to be armed to protect schools. Should we get ahead of this by adopting it as our policy, and requiring them to be highly regulated? Then they could become part of the government, and on our side.

Old Hand Progressive:

That sounds plausible. It is not politically correct. Remember, the issue is never the issue. The issue is always the revolution. You have to look long term. The idea of allowing armed teachers to defend schools works against us in many important ways.

It undermines our hard fought for creation of gun free zones in schools. We have the Supreme Court on our side there! We have managed to extend gun free zones to a thousand feet from the boundary of every school! It makes the carry of guns illegitimate in nearly every city in the nation. We are building from that base to extend gun free zones to parks, day care centers, public buildings.  It is far too important a goal to undermine with a policy that allows non-police to be armed in schools.  Can you understand the terrible danger to impressionable minds when students know their role models are carrying guns to defend them?

It subverts the important principle that defense through the use of force is not legitimate. If we are to disarm the people, they must be convinced

This is the view of many on the left. Perfection in the future is worth many people being killed today.

The Left sees themselves (or perhaps their leaders) as being so much better and wiser than anyone else, that only they should be allowed to make decisions for everyone.

I for one, would certainly be very comfortable with armed public school teachers around our kids.

“the issue is never the issue. The issue is always the revolution.”

What’s INGENIOUS about the above is that most conservatives are TOO STUPID to realize that’s how the Left works. That’s why we can try to ‘reason’ with them about the disaster of ‘Green Energy’ until we’re blue in the face, and all they’ll do is double down - as the issue was NEVER about Green Energy (it’s about the revolution...meaning 15 minute cities, no meat, etc.). We conservatives then walk away thinking how ‘dumb’ Leftists are, while they walk away LAUGHING at OUR STUPIDITY while moving to the next step in driving us out of our own homes.

I realize that many, if not most people here will still NOT GET IT, so perhaps this simplification will help: LEFTISTS ARE EVIL PEOPLE, and they HATE the America that we grew up in and love, and literally EVERYTHING they do now (including destroying the US dollar over Ukraine) is to PUT AN END to AMERICA as we knew it (they’ve long ago given up on ending Russia).

Hopefully this helps here a bit and I stop hearing people comment on how ‘dumb’ Leftists are.

(and yes, obviously I mean Leftist leaders - as their followers are typically paid by them to simply do as told)

You have the God given right to protect your family from harm no matter where they are. You don’t have to ask permission for that.

Don’t forget to add bush league chamber of commerce worshiping republiCAN’Ts to your list of leftists.
The revolution cannot be won without their support!

ABSOLUTELY! At least I don’t hear FReepers saying “My friends across the aisle”, like I do from many Republicans in DC.

I am against arming teachers.

As I wrote earlier, who gets to pick the teachers that'll pack heat?

Will it be some school board-designated committee (because we know how they LOVE justice)?

Will it be union goons?

Maybe it'll be the librarian who just added a bunch of Antifa books to the catalog.

Maybe it'll be these Fearless Ladies.

Or that collection of sex ed specialists pushing the latest claptrap on children.

It sure won't be the parents, who are "domestic terrorists" in the eyes of the DOJ.

I'll go a few steps further....let's say some leftist agitator-teacher who did 4 years in the Army's is deemed "competent." He sees a bunch of conservative students and monitors their online activity, decides they're a threat because they wrote "Let's Go Brandon" and FJB and posted pictures of them at gun shows on Instagram, and draws his weapon on them in class and calls the cops.

He will argue (and, I submit to you, be supported in the press and by the school board vociferously) that he stopped a possible disaster. The parents of these students will sue, the NEA will protect the teacher at all costs, the parents will spend thousands on legal fees and their kids will be doxxed and have a hard time getting in to college or trade school.

The teacher will keep his job and become a celebrity for 20% of this nation, and be loathed by 30-40% of the Deplorables. The remainder/ballast will waffle. Meanwhile, another school shooting will happen because that's part of the systematic risk in a free nation.

For a nation like Israel where the citizenry has experienced this palpably, and where the threat is probabilistically high (way higher than in America), it seems to work. I also suspect "competence" isn't as politically defined in Israel. Israel isn't America, and America isn't Israel, just like adopting the gun control policies of Europe won't work here.

In contemporary America, this is a nice idea on paper. In practice it'll fail, because the local government and DOJ will make the call on "competency." And then this guy will carry...

Viable options include Homeschooling and private schools. But as long as in loco parentis reigns supreme, this is a futile situation.

Whichever teacher has a gun, they won’t be waving it around the classroom and other teachers to force them to agree with their opinions.

That view probably dovetails with the Left’s other long held excuse about the failures of communism that being “the right people simply haven’t been given a chance to manage it”....

The teacher that SHOULD be armed, won’t.

The teacher that should NOT be armed, will.

That’s the way it is in schools. We have weaponized leftists pouring claptrap into young minds despite oversight, PTA, etc. Indeed, the overwhelming majority of educators are Dems. Small wonder there is so much racism in schools.

Maybe one or two decent educators get to pack heat. The rest of them will be like Randi Weingarten.

Parenthetically, school shootings are a very low probability event. Since 1970, there have been 2,057 incidents involving the discharge of a firearm on school property and 680 people have died.

https://www.campussafetymagazine.com/safety/k-12-school-shooting-statistics-everyone-should-know/

Yes, 680 deaths is tragic. But that’s also a normal month in Chicago.

Public schools may have been ok at one time. They’re a hot mess now. Abandon ship.

Don’t be so nutty, regardless of their personal politics the teachers who are armed will not be walking around pulling guns on everyone to enforce politics.

You oppose arming teachers.

You don’t have to ask permission for [protecting your family from harm].

Although this is a God-given right, the Democrat/Communists say otherwise, and they are, in many States, denying that right.

Our overlords have armed protection, for themselves and their kids. Just like back on the plantation when the slaves were kept in their places by guards — for same reasons.

Why should they care about slaves-to-be?
