California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) admitted Thursday that the state still faces the risk of blackouts in heat waves despite investing in battery capacity to store electricity for use in times of peak demand.
The Los Angeles Times reported:
Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that California continued to rapidly add the battery storage that is crucial to the transition to cleaner energy, but admitted it was still not enough to avoid blackouts during heat waves.
…
Asked by reporters if California now had enough battery storage so that residents no longer had to worry about blackouts during times of high power use, Newsom laughed.
“We have a lot of work to do still in moving this transition, with the kind of stability that’s required,” the governor said. “So no, this is not today announcing that blackouts are part of our past.”
California is pushing to meet ambitious “green energy” and “zero emissions” targets, including a transition to an all-electric car and truck fleet, despite the fact that the state lacks power generating capacity to meet growing demand.

Wait until the electric train starts dragging things offline. 😂
Maybe Grey Davis can come back in a consulting role....
Soon California will mandate paid time off for employees who can’t charge their EV’s during blackouts.
Incompetent is government’s first last and middle name
I remember back to 2000 or 2001. California was in a heat emergency and having a shortage of electricity!
I joked with a California friend that we here in the Southwest Power Pool(SPP) had so much excess electricity we were opening outlets and letting it drain out on the ground.
Battery storage is miniscule compared to demand and will not prevent blackouts anyway. Behind the scenes, the projected rise in demand for electric power due to AI processors will require huge increases over today’s production levels. Add in increasing EV demand, possible electric trains if they ever build one, and the case for nuclear power is peremptory and compelling. They’d do well to start now.
Please stop working. The people of California don't want to wind up living like citizens of North Korea.
Can Californians still use the term ‘black’ outs? ;)
Sounds fair. Can hardly wait for the fruition of a “dream” of dozens of charging stations every 150 miles. 😂😂😂👍
I wonder with today’s power grid if California’s grid collapses that could pull down the whole US grid?
The worse it gets in CA, the better...
It is what the CA voters want...
It’s ok, Californians love this kind of thing.
Gee, I wonder how many alerts I’ll get from my California city during heat waves to NOT plug in EVs?
Got quite a number of them last summer.
The charging stations in California are few and far between - as my Tesla owning relatives tell me. That and when they finally find one and pull in, they’re greeted by “out of order” signs.
We parked behind a row of EV chargers at a gas station/restaurant - the nozzle of every single charger had been vandalized.
That’s racist.
and higher electricity costs - less for more, the Marxist Way.
THE BIGGEST BLACKOUTS ARE BETWEEN NEWSON’S EARS
And gaggles of cars waiting
How many chargers out there by silver springs?
