NEW YORK, April 18 (Reuters) - Lawyers in Donald Trump's historic criminal trial on Thursday selected 12 jurors who will assess his guilt or innocence over the coming weeks in a case stemming from a hush-money payment to a porn star.
Lawyers for the defense and the prosecution still must select alternate jurors for the trial, the first ever in which a former U.S. president is the defendant. Opening statements could take place on Monday, said Justice Juan Merchan, the judge overseeing the trial.
Earlier in the day, Merchan dismissed a juror who said she felt intimidated that some personal information was made public. The judge also excused another juror after prosecutors said he may not have disclosed prior brushes with the law.
Trump's outsized public presence created unique problems during the jury selection process, which started on Monday.
Roughly half of the first 196 jurors screened in heavily Democratic Manhattan were dismissed after saying they could not assess the evidence impartially.

Definitely not 12 jurors of Trump’s peers.
The new Juror #2 is a man who follows Trump on truth social and follows Michael Cohen on X..seriously that is just a weird combo, you couldn’t pay me to follow Cohen the sleaze on X
The ones who got chosen almost certainly decided not to reveal that they will be less than impartial.
oh and he read “The art of the deal”
Perhaps the “news” sources who have informed such admittedly-biased folks are the ones who should have been gagged, all along.
Perhaps the lying media shouldn’t be trusted with the “court of public opinion”.
Hey, Judge Merchan?
12 Woke Fools?
You have it down. Best liars get on the kangaroo court jury.
a jury that will absolutely “convict” for a non-crime is something to behold for sure
This’d make a great premise for a comedy. Sort of like Police Academy only with jurors.
Not peers....
Again, when the roomful of potential jurors could be mistaken for a film production company’s casting call for extras for remakes of Barbershop and Car Wash then it is not going to produce a jury of Trump’s peers.
The OJ travesty let a guilty man go free who had Nicole’s blood on one sock and his own dna found at the murder site but a police officer had used the “n” word in a racist way in the past. Not guilty (to make up for memories of past white supremacist groups convicting black men since the 1850s).
The new Trump jury is going to convict an honest man who is being persecuted by political enemies. The jurors hate Trump but lied to say they didn’t. To make up for Republicans not giving reparations to downtrodden black people led by Trump.
America. Sadly.
Maybe Trump should start a local campaign that so overwhelms the city that Merchan regrets making him stay in the city. He might want to get him out of the city of Trump handles it well.
I heard they only asked one question of potential jurors. “Do you hate Trump with all your heart and do you get all your news fron MSNBC?
Oy jesse waters went through the jury list trump doesn’t stand a chance he’s basically been convicted today
totally agree. there is literally no reason ever to follow Cohen unless (a) you’re a sycophant plant, or (b) you want to destroy Trump. I’m not a total fan of Trump, but it would literally never ever occur to me to follow a Cohen account in any universe.
Handpicked guilty votes for the clown judge.
That one made me laugh out loud because it is so true. Now I really want to see the Police Academy movies (really only the first 2 because the rest sucked) transformed into jury movies. 12 Angry Men meets [Actual Humanity At It’s Absolute Worst and Even 1980s caricatures Can’t Do It Justice]
They definitely are by definition.
Fair trial? Haha - 12 people living in New York that are happy with the justice system there.
Trump is being railroaded, as everyone knows.
His best shot at winning this trial is to have at least one juror who digs in his or her heals and refuses to convict.
But my guess is that there will be more jurors who will refuse to acquit no matter what. And this will lead to mistrial and new trials until the prosecutor and judge get the desired outcome.
But I don’t think a conviction will withstand a review by the Supreme Court.
Hope the outcome is better than my gut feeling.
