Seattle Public Schools is dismantling its gifted and talented program, which administrators argued was oversaturated with white and Asian students, in favor of a more “inclusive, equitable and culturally sensitive” program.
The district began phasing out its Highly Capable Cohort schools and classrooms for advanced students in the 2021-22 school year due to racial inequities, the school district notes.
The program will completely cease to exist by the 2027-28 school year, with a new enrichment-for-all model available in every school by the 2024-25 school year.
“The program is not going away, it’s getting better,” school officials said on the district website.

enrichment for all = black students raping white and asian ones.
“...school officials lied through their rotten stinking teeth.”
This idea was actually codified in Federal law with Ted Kennedy’s ‘No Child Left Behind’ Act which required that 100% of public school kids be ranked as ‘proficient’ or higher in math, reading and science by a certain date. That date, of course, never arrived because ugly reality showed up long before.
But the point is, they really believe that any disparity in learning ability cannot be due to nature, but rather things like racism, economic status, etc. All of this in spite of the fact that every human has encountered ‘stupid’ people and their opposite, smart people.
“ The enrichment program currently only allows students who placed in the top 2 percent on standardized exams to be placed in the Highly Capable Cohort to receive enriched learning.”
“ But in 2020, the Seattle school board voted to terminate the program, after a 2018 survey found that the students in the Highly Capable Cohort were 13% multiracial, 11.8% Asian, 3.7% Hispanic and just 1.6% black.”
“ Nearly 70% of the students were white.
“Numbers would suggest that within our city … predominantly white children are more gifted than other cultures and races, and we know that is absolutely not true,” Kari Hanson, the district’s director of student support services, told Parent Map at the time.”
I guess 2 + 2 will equal 5 once again since math is racist and is a tool used by White Supremacists. Boeing does not need math or science proficient employees. Planes will just fall out of the sky because planes are racist too.
Deprive everyone equally. Spread the misery around.
Exactly -- it's not "hypocritical" at all, Democrats are being consistent.
Similar to having "no cash bail" policies since the "poor" can't afford bail, and it's "not fair" that some can post bail and some can't, so let them all back out on the street! Crime skyrockets as the repeat offenders are released over and over again.
As you say, bring them all down to the lowest common denominator. That's what socialism is, take away the capacity to succeed from everyone, until nobody has anything, and everyone is stupid, but the elite are more securely in charge than ever before.
well! we cant have that!!!
That presumes the family of a talented student has the financial resources to pursue that option. Mine did not. I didn't let the limitations of the public school prevent me from accessing the library and other resources. My middle son excelled at math and science and took multiple AP courses where he provided evening tutoring to his fellow students and sometimes taught the material in class because the union seat warmer had no clue about the material.
Yes. Everyone gets a trophy! There are no winners and losers!
Merit has no place in a perfect society!
For 50 years I have been saying the USA is the Least Common Denominator society.
I read about a psychological test given to young children to determine whether they should be placed into the “gifted” program. It was a joke. I can understand the argument against it.
If a child is truly “gifted and talented,” he wouldn’t even need school. He could learn quickly on his own. Instead of high school, he could go straight to college.
We didn’t have a “gifted & talented” program in Catholic school. Some students did better than others, but that’s the nature of learning in a classroom. If you want your kids to learn in a group with other kids, that’s what you have to expect.
“predominantly white children are more gifted than other cultures and races, and we know that is absolutely not true”
Good point.
The Asians should have been a higher percentage of the total.
:-)
If you don’t acknowledge the realities of disparity in learning, you will end up with black students violently beating whites or Asian students. (Wait ! We already see that happening !)
We have MANY high school graduates across the USA who cannot read their own high school diploma.
Don’t you dare bring that up!
At least they’re being honest about it. Here in Fairfax County, VA, they went through all kinds of machinations to get unqualified students into our gifted high school. Thomas Jefferson High School was regularly listed as one of the top schools in the nation, but already has started to slide.
I hope these gifted Asian and White students sue the Seattle Public Schools right down to their personal possessions.

Oh sure.
“a new enrichment-for-all model”
I can’t speak for everyone, but I am getting pretty tired of all the “enrichment” being shoved down my throat.
I spent the greater portion of my elementary school years bored out of my skull.
I went to Catholic boarding school in Paintsville KY for 6 and a half years circa 1950s. Finished my grammar school in Pomona CA. Day school. Both catholic both taught by nuns. In KY we hd 2-4 grades in a room small class size. In Pomona we had 40 in the room, 1 grade in each room.
When i pulled up to Pomona I was 6 months ahead in reading and math with the same books being used as KY. No blacks some Hispanics, no asians, a few Jews in Pomona. In KY all white. Lots of Italians
