A major California McDonald’s franchisee is speaking out against Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) new minimum wage law that will force fast food businesses to pay workers at least $20 per hour, saying menu items would become “unaffordable” if scaled to the increased wages.
Kerri Harper-Howie, a Los Angeles-based franchisee who owns 21 McDonald’s locations across the state with her sister, says her profits will tank while trying to keep up with the guidelines from the California Fast Food Council, which Newsom created in 2023.

Well, per my research, it probably cost those owners of 21 stores about $1m-$2m initial investment in each location (or $21m to $42m in total). The average annual profit is about $150k/store, on average sales of $2.7m, or about 5.5%. Not a lot of leeway if labor costs increase tremendously. If you can’t push prices to help cover those increased labor costs (and whatever inflation is doing to all the food costs involved), you’ll be upside down pretty quickly and end up busted. A helluva lot of investment going down the drain. As usual, most democrats don’t know the first thing about running a business and how often it’s a thin line between profit and loss. Obviously.
.........wanna bet that Kerri votes for a Democrat every time?????
I am old enough to remember a steak sandwich at Sizzler for $1.59
I remember 15 cent burgers when I was a kid.
My condolences, little friend.
Money is the life blood for politicians. Businesses donate to political parties. Why did these businesses not support Republicans?
California is a one party state which means any insane idea one of them has can become law. There are no check or balance to the Democrats. The only option is for people to leave the state which is hard for restaurant to do. However, they can close and while McDonalds may survive many will not.
“Newsom, as the majority of political hacks, know nothing about business and should stay out of it”
IIRC Gov. Greaseball back in the covid days carved out less restrictions for Napa County California Wineries. Well by golly you would never guess who is co-owner of the the Pumpjack Winery Group in Napa, yep Greaseball and Gordon Getty. (of course he is of THAT Getty family)
That was a company from Sweden in the 1980’s
I sold them when I worked for LDS Tulsa...
The big mac has changed: smaller meat patties, smaller bun, smaller cheese slices. Everything is smaller. The meat patties have shrunk the most.
“On the infrequent times I get fast food, I’ve ordered/paid on the kiosks. Haven’t seen a cashier-staffed McD’s for a long time.”
Same in my immediate area (a third ring suburb of Minneapolis). Occasionally, there’s someone behind the counter but it’s usually a Hispanic who takes order from other Hispanics whose English is too bad to read the kiosk.
Democrats love playing Sandy Claws with other peoples’ money.
Goobermint has no business dictating wages employers must pay.
“Haven’t seen a cashier-staffed McD’s for a long time.”
All 17 of our local franchise stores are being remodeled. Most completed now. The new configuration include a variable number of kiosks and two POS terminals at the counter but not normally with an employee continuously assigned to those terminals. But if the staff members in the kitchen and preparation area see a customer standing at the counter they can and do come over and assist them.
I threw them off the other day by purchasing 10 gift cards. I actually felt bad that it’s not automated yet.
The beef patties are not 95% smaller since then, the dollar is…
He is going to give free coupons to illegals for McDonald’s. Gavin has it all figured out.
Wake up America, this is what’s coming to the rest of the country when Gavin Newsom is inserted by the Democrats in place of Biden
True and I have been in that situation - which is why cooking, even something simple saves $$$$.
