Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul reintroduces Breonna Taylor Act

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Four years after the death of Breonna Taylor, lawmakers are renewing their efforts to ban no-knock warrants.

The push comes as Congress has struggled to enact policing reforms.

Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul says it is time to ban no-knock warrants.

“It’s just not a good idea to go in without announcing yourself,” Sen. Rand Paul, (R-Ky.) said.

No-knock warrants are when law enforcement go into a home without announcing their authority or purpose.

Paul named his bill after Breonna Taylor, who was killed in March 2020 when police entered her apartment through a no-knock raid and shot her.

Paul first filed the bill in 2020, but it did not have a Democratic co-sponsor and did not move forward. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) is co-sponsoring the current bill.

“Libertarians like myself have been talking about no-knock raids, really for a long time. Even before this,” Paul said.

Paul says in many cases no-knock warrants are used for non-violent offenses.

“They involve drugs and drugs are bad and people are harmed by drugs, but it’s mostly people choosing to harm themselves,” Paul said.

He says these raids also put law enforcement at risk.

“Arrest them during the daytime when they go to the coffee shop, when they’re alone, when they’re not behind a closed door,” Paul said.

State and local law enforcement agencies that receive federal funding would be required to follow these new rules.

“This is about police safety as well,” Paul said.

Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine agrees it’s a good idea to ban no-knock warrants.

He thinks naming a bill after a criminal and contrived victim is a selling point?

Dealing with no-knock warrants is fine, but using Breonna Taylor as a catalyst is a bad idea.

We’re a union of states. That’s where the decision should be made, imo.

Yep. The cops had a no knock warrant, but didn't use it.

They knocked and announced themselves.

Taylor and her "boyfriend" were standing in the hall, him using her as a human shield, when he shot through the door, hitting a cop.

He admitted that they heard police announce, but he said they thought it was JaMarcus Glover, her ex, come to rob them of drugs and money.

A jury of his peers acquitted him of all charges.

Rand Paul also supported the drug dealer amnesty. The nut doesn’t fall far from the tree.

“Paul named his bill after Breonna Taylor, who was killed in March 2020 when police entered her apartment through a no-knock raid and shot her.”

That’s not quite right. On March 12, 2020, a Jefferson County Circuit Court judge approved five search warrants for locations linked to Taylor’s ex-boyfriend, a convicted felon suspected of supplying a local drug house. One of those locations was Taylor’s residence.

In the early hours of March 13, Hankison and other officers executed a warrant at Taylor’s apartment. Taylor was in bed with her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker III, WHEN OFFICERS ANNOUNCED THEIR PRESENCE and then battered down the front door. Walker grabbed a gun he legally owned and fired a shot when the officers broke through the door. Taylor was hit in return fire.

I would be happy if they would stop using unmarked cars which was supposed to be against state law

"He thinks naming a bill after a criminal and contrived victim is a selling point?"

He and his wife were accosted by BLM on the street in Washington after leaving the 2020 Republican Convention. The crowd was following them and screaming: “Breonna Taylor,” “Say her name” and “No justice, no peace” as they walked down the street. Paul made a big deal of it, making the rounds of the TV news shows, claiming their lives were in danger, and reminding everyone that he was the author of the Breonna Taylor Act, as if that mattered to a bunch of animals.

After being beaten up by his neighbor, and claiming he and his wive's lives were in danger on that Washington Street, he turned-tail and voted to accept Biden's electors on January 6th, apparently eating up the main stream media's horseshit regarding what was going on in the Capitol Building. I'll never forgive him or Marsha Blackburn for changing their plans to reject Biden's electors that day.

No-knock orders undermine the whole Constitutional purpose of requiring the state officers to identify themselves and demand entry to avoid unnecessary violence. If someone kicks down my door without identifying themself as a law enforcement officer with a warrant, I’ll be aggressively defending my home and family with all of the tools available to me.

Participating in illegal drug sales as the stash house for your criminal boyfriend is never a good idea.

The cops did knock and announce, repeatedly. It’s on video. And there was plenty of time to open the door. Then her retarded boyfriend shot at the cops and they shot back. It was not mistaken identity.

Also lets talk about the dead body found in the truck of her abandoned rental car!
She was a damned crook and drug dealer, involved witha killer and she was not that far away. The world is better with her gone.

I like Rand but this was a stupid flex.

Actually, using her name is smart politics, and almost assures it will pass both the House and Senate.

So many people killed and injured because of no knock warrants including Law Enforcement. They are senseless... All just intended to keep the toilet from flushing... Were all these years of preventing the toilet from flushing actually worth it?

Common sense folks would say no...

No knock warrants have a purpose. They do not give crooks time to grab a weapon to shoot police and they allow crooks time to destroy evidence. They are used in particular circumstances which warrant caution. Flame suit on.

We’re not vary far from having a technological solution to this issue. We now have humanoid robots doing back flips and quickly traversing uneven terrain.

We pretty much know NOW how to build a remote-controlled robotic avatar which can bust through doors and walls and capture/disable an armed human threat, without use of deadly force because robots are repairable/expendable.
