Fed-up homeowner arrested after tense standoff with squatters ‘stealing’ $1M house she inherited from parents

A New York City property owner recently ended up in handcuffs following a fiery standoff with a bunch of squatters she has been trying to boot from her family’s home, tense footage of the ordeal shows.

Adele Andaloro, 47, was recently nabbed after she changed the locks on the $1 million home in Flushing, Queens that she says she inherited from her parents when they died, ABC’s Eyewitness News reported.

“It’s enraging,” the homeowner said of the squatter saga. “It’s not fair that I, as the homeowner, have to be going through this.”

Andaloro claims the ordeal erupted when she started the process of trying to sell the home last month but realized squatters had moved in — and brazenly replaced the entire front door and locks.

Yes, NYC will arrest the actual homeowner and the state will tax her for the amount of the inheritance that she can’t claim.

Why do squatters have any rights at all?

“Squatting” is just a euphemism for defiant criminal trespass.

I’ve often thought that a friend of a friend could be contacted that knows someone who knows someone with muscle. Someone who could get those people out. For good.

But then the homeowner would probably be “in debt” to those someones.

But still... better to be tied to wise guys than allow squatters to ruin your home.

This has always been the way things have worked in New York.

Go find a big man with some friends that wants to make $10,000. Give him $5,000 to squat on the squatters and muscle them out. $5,000 when he has moved out.

The NYPD is a force multiplier for the squatters when they do things like this.

I would think breaking and entering would be a crime when these punks break in.

Typical NY BS, they always protect the criminals. Effing democrats!

Yep - criminals and freeloaders. That’s what the Democrats are all about.

I wonder if the homeowner votes Democrat and if she intends to continue doing so after this?

I was fortunate some years ago when we had a squatter in a rental property we owned. He had, with his mother’s help, moved in on his sister, to whom we were renting the house. After some time, she was unhappy with the situation and tried to get him to move out; unsuccessfully. She finally just moved out, but he stayed, and he was not even trying to pick up the rent.

We went and confronted him and warned him we’d have him forcefully evicted. He claimed he was a “veteran” and as a veteran he “had his rights”. We told him nothing gave him the right to occupy our property - which he as making a shambles of.

Fortunately we had friends in both the local police department and the local sherriffs office. They agreed to help us, unofficially.

Together with out law enforcement friends in tow we returned to the prpoerty the next day. They started writing up citations for many illegal things he was doing on the property - essentially running a junk car and motorcycle repair operation on a residential property (according to neighbors, till all hours of the nite). Our law enforcement friends threatened to arrest him for his illegal operations if he was not gone in 24 hours. (He was not smart enough to know they first had to take him to court). We figured the threats by our law enforcement friends would be enough0

Sometime in the following 24 hours he left. And left us such a mess in and outside the house it took three junkyard tow trucks, some flatbed tow trunks and three multi-ton dumpsters to clear all his junk out - and that’s not considering the repairs we had to do inside the house.

However, with our law enforcement friends help we avoided lenghthy court processes to get the guy out.

Unfortunately in some states, like New York, squAtters get the presumption of innocent, no matter what, and until you go through the long court process to prove your claim, they get to occupy your property without any hinderance from you.

It should be the reverse, that a squatter should gave to prove they have a valid lease from the valid owner, or else.

Not really throwing rocks at you personally; you and your friends got stuff done. Good for you.

But ...

This is a form of corruption.

The "connected" people get justice ... or some reasonable facsimile thereof.

Everybody else gets the shaft.

Clever, but homeowners shouldn’t have to do all that. They should be able to kick squatters out, period. It’s outrageous that they can’t.

All crimes ..even bashing someone’s head in..have been decriminalized in certain parts of the country.

Why not just counter-squat. Bring in the family tree and occupy the house. Be sure to take two hours using the bathroom, and don’t flush the toilet.

Be thankful he wasn’t smart enough to get an attorney, because he probably had a “right” to sue.

Crimes, unpunished, become trends. Successful trends become industry. The illegal invaders will learn how to work the system and every vacant property will be at risk. There is little downside to the property squatter because even if eventually kicked out, they have benefitted from free housing during their occupation. I would love to franchise an anti squatter business, but the downside is murder, manslaughter, or injury to the contractor or perp. Regardless, the owners have power to successfully fight but must keep the situation off the radar of the police and media. Stalk the property until the squatter leaves. Break in and change locks. Camp at the widow. Have 911 ready to dial. Call and scream bloody murder and “home invasion” on the phone at first sight of the squatter’s return. Then, invest in ADT! I went through a very similar thing in June of 2020 during Covid. The guy I had to evict (former owner’s crackhead boyfriend), kept breaking back in at 3am. ADT was great but the Aurora (CO) police were less than helpful. The dude never stayed long enough to get caught. One day, on my way to the property, ADT called with another alert. I called the Aurora police again and they circled the house. The Lt said this it was an “eviction issue” and that Covid tied their hands. He then asked, “how do you really know he’s in there? Did you see him?” I said no. So, with about 6 Aurora pd on scene, he let ME “clear the house”. I pulled out my handgun and did exactly that as they waited. Luckily, the psycho wasn’t there. However, the whole thing was very surreal. I’m still looking for the sonofabitch. I had him served for $23k in damages for repeated break-ins and related costs - judgement awarded by default.

The Free State of Florida just fixed this: at the request of the legal owner/lessee, cops can now eject almost anyone from a dwelling that can’t show written proof of ownership or valid written lease contract ...

It is a measure of how screwed up our legal system is that this wasn't the default position of the entire legal system.

Yes, the owner should have the right to eject anyone who doesn't belong there.
