Putin extends rule in preordained Russian election after harshest crackdown since Soviet era

President Vladimir Putin extended his reign over Russia in a landslide election whose outcome was never in doubt, declaring Monday his determination to advance deeper into Ukraine and dangling new threats against the West.

After the harshest crackdown on dissent since Soviet times, it was clear from the earliest returns that Putin’s nearly quarter-century rule would continue with a fifth term that grants him six more years. Still, Russians heeded a call to protest Putin’s repression and his war in Ukraine by showing up at polling stations at noon on Sunday. With all the precincts counted Monday, election officials said Putin had secured a record number of votes, underlining his total control over the political system. U.S. and other Western leaders denounced the election as a sham.

The election was “neither free nor fair in any sort of way,” said Nigel Gould-Davies, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Ahead of the election, Putin’s greatest political foe, Alexei Navalny, died in an Arctic penal colony, anti-war candidates were barred from the ballot and independent voices were silenced in a Kremlin-backed media blockade. No independent monitoring organizations were able to observe the election and analysts said online polling meant the vote was highly susceptible to manipulation. Any public criticism of Putin or his war in Ukraine has been stifled.

Putin appeared Monday evening on Red Square in the heart of Moscow at a concert to mark the tenth year since he annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Putin’s three token challengers for the presidency appeared on stage beside him and publicly supported him after campaigns in which none of them criticized him.

Oh and btw:

NAIROBI, March 18. /TASS/. The president of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, has congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on his re-election, the Nigerien Press Agency reported.

The US and UK are increasingly isolated from the world’s people, and this need not be so.

Putin shows more leadership abilities greatly surpassing Bidens without question......a for his election no one should be surprised. Contrary to what media says here in the states the vast majority of Russians are satisfied with Putin as their President.

“As of 2020, there are 52 nations with a dictator or authoritarian regime ruling the country: Three in Latin America and South America, 27 in Asia and the Middle East, and 22 in Africa.

Is Russia a dictatorship?

Russia is a federal semi-presidential republic and an oligarchy. President Vladimir Putin is currently serving his fourth term as President of Russia. Despite repeated promises to leave office in 2024 (when his term limit is reached), Putin spearheaded a 2020 constitutional amendment enabling him to remain in power until 2036. Whether or not Putin is a dictator is a matter of some debate. Those who believe that he is a dictator argue that he imprisons his opponents, removed freedom of speech—the press can only publish what he allows them to—and has restructured the government to give himself more and longer-lasting power. In addition to executive authority, Putin also holds judicial and legislative power, which enables him to change the law to fit his agenda.” (excerpt)

“”””Putin was congratulated by leaders of countries comprising the majority of mankind. It is not clear at all why the US, UK and EU choose to isolate themselves from the world’s people.””””

We are seeing that more and more here on FR, ‘the leaders of the majority of people on earth, so why not us’.

Obama must be jealous.

Putin can now be proclaimed "President for Life".

We can now dispense with elections in Russia, because what's the point?

The best thing McConnell ever did, IMHO, was blocking Obama Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland from ever having a hearing.

Look at all the Putin apologists coming out here.

Where?

I see people who aren’t buying in to all of this “Zelensky is God and Ukraine is perfect” spam, but that doesn’t make them/us “Putin apologists.”
