A black, deaf Google employee – who had been celebrated at corporate events and on social media as a success story for the search giant’s inclusive workplace – has accused the company of discrimination based on her disability and race.
In an explosive lawsuit filed in the US Northern District of California, Jalon Hall — the first and only black, deaf hire at Google, according to Wired — slammed Google for limiting her access to sign-language interpreters months after starting the job.
In the complaint, the worker painted Google’s management environment as hostile and racially charged.
She cited Google’s manager at the company’s machine-learning research program calling her an “aggressive black deaf woman” and advising her to “keep her mouth shut and take a sales role”. Google also excluded her from roundtable discussions and passed her over for promotion due to “inaccurate evaluation” after three years, according to the suit.

She was hired because she was a two-fer...black and disabled...I’m sure they tout the blacks who work at google and most of them are probably the kitchen help......BUT THEY ARE BLACK AND WORK AT GOOGLE........

They hired a deaf person to be a content moderator? That was pretty stupid itself. So then they have to hire a translator to tell her what is being said in the video she’s moderating?
Google offers automatic captioning now. It's not 100% accurate yet. But it's getting there.
The term *Deaf* can have a wide range of meaning in the Deaf Community. It ranges from hard of hearing and needing hearing aids, to profoundly deaf, as in can't hear almost at all.
Also, many Deaf have cochlear implants. And even with the mechanical assistance, many Deaf prefer ASL interpretation.
This article portrays her as fully deaf with no options for implants or hearing aids. There's a lot of information missing here.
I wonder how much this will cost Google, just so it could check off a couple of boxes for diversity and inclusion brownie points?
I assume that she is fully deaf. After all, she got an interpreter.
There are many deaf employees in a wide variety of jobs who have zero issues.
She is using her black/deaf card and as a result, she is making other black and/or deaf folks look bad.
She's not interested in working. She wants a payday from Google.

I’ve done ASL interpreting and know several Deaf people and using an ASL interpreter is not necessarily an indicator of being fully deaf.
And I’d say especially in this situation where she’s so willing to play the victim card and sue. If she’s willing to do that, I could see her demanding an interpreter even if she didn’t need one.
Most Deaf I know are NOT like that though, FWIW.
Good point. I can't find anything about her. Usually with a quick search, you can find a lot of information. There should be one video of her using ASL.
Maybe she decided to game the system. It could be that she's just hard of hearing. No one dares to call her out on it, it's possible. But somebody will have to do some investigating.

Of course since Google is Evil they also might have treated her quite poorly. This is a usual thing from companies who want to proclaim how "nice" they are. They are often jerks in real life.

I worked at a company a very long time ago.
I am assuming that high intelligence was not a prerequisite for employment with that company.
