Jimmy Carter has spent over a year in hospice care. How has he defied the odds?

Last month, former President Jimmy Carter marked one year in hospice. After entering end-of-life care in February 2023, he celebrated his 99th birthday and grieved the death of his wife of 77 years and former first lady, Rosalynn Carter.

Even then, Carter was able — with help — to attend her funeral.

Even at the end of life, the nation’s longest-living president — someone who “practically no one ever thought” would be elected president, writes the New York Times’ Peter Baker — is defying the odds.

According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 90% of patients who enter hospice care die within the first six months. Roughly 36% of patients die within a week of entering hospice.

End-of-life advocates and experts cite Carter’s stay in hospice as having a positive impact on the discourse surrounding end-of-life care — a medical service that Northeastern University experts say many people put off until it’s too late.

Yeah. That was my thought. Half naked, shooting up in public and sleeping in urine and feces. So dignified.

Post presidency Carter walked the walk with his generous and very low key non profit work, for those efforts I applaud and admire him.

I do too, but some people see his association with builders of substandard housing to be given away to substandard people was virtue signalling to a charity that really helped no one. Except do-gooders who told themselves how concerned they were for the poor.

Like Catholic Charities today.

He did send those helicopters to Iran on a rescue mission. But the helicopters got caught in a sandstorm. That's how I remember it.

He was an unlucky president. Even when he did the right thing, fate conspired against him.

The OP said angry about Reagan as some sort of excuse to vote for Carter or for Carter’s win . Maybe, but I thought really it was more about not liking Ford because of his association to Nixon. But yes Reagan lost the primary, so I guess maybe anger at that caused some to sit home. I can’t see Reagan supporters flipping to Carter out of spite. But I was in 1st grade at the time and can’t recall such details. 😂

Weak men blame their failures on “fate” and “luck.”

His extreme hatred of Israel even alienated his self-loathing Jewish staffers.

"Extreme hatred"? He facilitated the Camp David Accords and bribed Egypt (with U.S. tax dollars) to make peace with Israel.

I assume Israel thought the Accords were a good deal, otherwise it wouldn't have agreed to it.

Iran waited to return the hostages under Reagan as a final insult to Carter. Had Carter won? They would have been returned anyway. Look - I don’t like his time in office, but those who nitpick at minor points like the Hostages and the Panama Canal are deluding themselves.

Focus your hatred on LBJ, Clinton, Obammie and FJB.

I remember that. And H. Ross also sent a failed paramilitary team.

Yet many Freepers think Perot was a hero.

As I recall, Reagan took all but two states in 1980.

I was never impressed with either of them.

You’ll need to find something relevant to support your argument.

Why not just admit all of them, including Jimmy “Great Malaise” Carter, suck.

Oh...and feel free to wallow in hatred, if that’s your thing.

I always believed his heart was in the right place though, he loved our country.

Name three things he did that benefited the US and, or western civilization during or after his innocent and loving gutting of our intelligence.

Go.
