Russia has destroyed a Ukrainian-operated HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) close to the eastern frontlines, new footage appears to show, in what would be the first confirmed loss of the U.S.-donated multiple rocket launchers for Kyiv.

Footage circulated by Russian sources, and shared by open-source intelligence accounts, appears to show the moment Moscow fires on the HIMARS with a missile, followed quickly by visible flames and billowing smoke.

Russian sources said the Kremlin struck the HIMARS close to the village of Nikanorivka, between 25 and 30 miles west of the current front lines northwest of the captured city of Avdiivka and southwest of the Russian-controlled settlement of Bakhmut.

Russia popped 3 of them since late January.

They watch them as rotation happens between site. They use a half dozen locations and when they and scoot they default to one of previously identified sites and Russia launches against known parking locations.

The use drones by Russia has exploded and now they literally have them parked overheadnearly all the time. Soon they will have them up 24/7.

Without adequate air defense artillery/missile batteries Ukraine is suffering losses Nationwide.

Thole loss of Himars is due to loss of ADA and overhead Russian drones. NATO will have to break with their pre-identified scoot locations to save them.

How much did that cost? And yes, now more than ever the money wasted matters a great deal.

The HIMARS, being mounted on a truck chassis makes it a “soft target,” in field artillery terminology, thus a fairly easy kill. At least that is how I as a FO would have called it in to my battery for a fire mission, “back in the day” of the 1970s & 80s.

Dumbasses. Shoot and scoot only works when the enemy doesn’t know where you are going.

I thought it might have been one of their fakes the way it was staged out in the open, but the secondaries put that notion to rest.

Whenever I question or oppose spending for the UKRAINE PROJECT, ZEEPERS are quick to try to convince me that “it’s a rounding error” or “a lot of the money will be spent in the US”. They can’t argue that EVERY PENNY of those HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS will be added to our national debt — 100%.

Yep, an old school soft target, the advantages are they are more nimble and easier to conceal.

Today, you would have many more tools to locate and identify your targets, and a much better selection of stuff to send their way.

or it could have been a fake with some ammo/mines nearby to produce the secondaries.

It used to be called ‘salting the target’ after the old wild west trick of salting a mine. The person selling the mine would fire small amounts of gold from a shotgun into the walls of the mine making it look like rich deposits.

Back in the early days of the missile programs, some would put explosives in the target to produce a vivid explosion when the missile hit the target. In one notable example, the explosives were to be triggerd remotely. The person with the trigger could not see the target so he was told to wait five seconds after the countdown reached zero and trigger the explosives. Now, what could go wrong with that? The count reached zero, the person waited five seconds, triggered the explosives but the missile never left the launch pad.

In a typical modern order of battle, 1/2 of all artillery fire is “counter-battery.” Which means half the rounds your artillery fires is dedicated to knocking out the other guy’s artillery. You lose artillery just like any other piece on the chessboard.

Which is why they practice “shoot and scoot.”

I was looking for that.

If they rigged it to look like propellant cooking off (which it did), well done...though I don’t recall seeing warheads cooking off, did you? /s
