I’m thankful I haven’t had to go up that way “so far”. I feel genuinely pity for the people up on the high plains (Amarillo).

The Smokehouse Creek Fire is an ongoing and record-breaking wildfire affecting the northeastern Texas panhandle and western Oklahoma that started on February 26, 2024. The fire has affected numerous communities in Hemphill and Roberts counties, including the town of Canadian. As of February 28, 2024, the fire has burned approximately 1,075,000 acres (1,680 sq mi; 435,000 ha) and is 3 percent contained, making it the largest wildfire on record in Texas’s history (going back to 1988). It is one of multiple fires burning in an outbreak of wind-driven wildfires in the Great Plains. So far there has been 2 fatalities reported, 1 in the town of Stinnett, Texas, about 74 miles (119 km) northeast of Amarillo, and the other in the town of Amarillo, Texas.

"Wildfires as a whole are anticipated to only worsen as the world continues to burn fossil fuels that release planet-warming greenhouse gases. Last year, scientists at Climate Central released a report finding that wildfire seasons in the U.S. are "lengthening and intensifying, particularly in the West."

"Human-caused climate change accounts for at least two-thirds of the rapid increase in fire weather in the western U.S. in recent decades," Climate Central says.

So sad, went to school in Lubbock and was in Amarillo a week ago. There is a lot of scrub brush and tumbleweeds out there, not too many people about 17 per sq mile. Prayers up for everyone. Hopefully with some rain this spring the grass will come back quickly.

Fires start and spread easily in those conditions. Don’t jump to conclusions.

Exactly. We were in the highest level of fire danger Monday and Tuesday and it is back up again today. Almost no humidity and high winds is guaranteed wildfires.

Fires often start from something as simple as a spark caused by a plow hitting a rock.

I made a trip back to Wichita Falls about this time of year in ‘17. Took the route 385 down from Dalhart driving a box truck. The wind was miserable and the terrain looked like a tinder box. I wonder just how far this one will go?

I hope this doesn’t hasn’t become a blue state Trump Derangement syndrome terrorist tactic against red states.
Could even the disturbed sink so low? People have lost their homes and even lives in wildfires. Sad.

I saw a fire started by a piece of broken glass in a bar ditch on a hot summer day.

My gut is telling me this is sinister.
