Google Still Doesn't Get It
PJ Media ^ | FEBRUARY 29, 2024 | Stephen Green

Google is now in full damage-control mode following last week's embarrassing revelations about the Woke bias baked deep into the company's Gemini large language model — aka, artificial intelligence.

...

Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote to employees in an internal memo, "I know that some of its responses have offended our users and shown bias — to be clear, that's completely unacceptable and we got it wrong."

Pichai's memo doesn't address the root issue. The problem isn't that users were offended. The problem isn't that Gemini has "shown bias," although that phrase is a tell. The problem is that Gemini is biased, and that the rot goes to the heart of its code.

To Pichai, the problem seems to be that we're offended because Gemini's bias was shown — that we could see it.

...

But that's not what users saw with our own eyes. What we saw was an undeniable bias that went only one way.

...

Google has a trust issue, blown up into the public consciousness in a way that pictures — in this case, pictures of black Vikings, Native American Founding Fathers, and ...

...

Conservatives and others have long complained that Google's black boxes were no longer trustworthy — that what came out of the black box wasn't the best info you needed but what Google wanted you to see.

"Gemini wasn't built to serve different users

Google is evil.

Haven’t used it since 1999. Except for rare instances like streetview, which is unmatched.

This article is right. The issue is not the people are offended or amused or insulted. The issue is that Gemini effectively is lying to people. And Google is oblivious to that concern.

“CEO Sundar Pichai”

Sounds exactly like who was in charge of Twitter before Elon Musk bought it.

Google is absolutely attempting to erase history, and their search results show it.

Google Gemini just so happens to be the worst of it.

If you want to see how bad it is here is a video:

In a proper diffusion based generative AI image gen, you train it with images from wherever you can get them so long as they are tagged (i.e. paintings of vikings are tagged with keywords like vikings) and it learns how to recognize what a viking typically looks like. Then when you ask it to draw a viking it starts with random noise and begins processing it in steps, looking for patterns that might hint at a viking and refining in more steps until it the hidden viking emerges.

If you ask if for a viking it should result in something that looks like what the AI was trained in from thousands of immages of vikings. There are no such images of black female vikings to train on. So how could it come up with them? Simple. Google, under the hood, has told it that when you ask for things, make it diverse. In other words they have instructed the AI that whatever you ask for it must put a chick in it, make her gay and lame (to borrow a phrase).

In principle they could adjust those weights and retrain (over a looooong time, these things take forever to train) and re-release it without the obvious bias. But really, why would you ever trust them at this point? They just lost the AI war. And that is a very very bad thing for them.

I stopped using everything Google years ago when I read their gmail license agreement. Not only does Google track you, you gave them the right to read your email and, at their discretion, to sell that information on the open market. The same is true for their search engine. For that reason, I use DuckDuckGo for searches and I think it’s every bit as good as Google. However, unlike Google, it will return results that are favorable to Conservatives. I use a private email vendor for anything I don’t want to go public. I quit gmail altogether.

That seems to be the fashion nowadays. Do something obviously nefarious then immediately apologize and tug the forelock — “We were wrong. We should have done better.” Then continue doing it but with better camouflage.

The issue is that Gemini effectively is lying to people. And Google is oblivious to that concern

The issue is that there are so many anti-white embeds in Google atht even if management wanted to get rid of them (they don't) they couldn't find them all.

Why do all the schools have ChromeBooks? Why do all school assignments use Google Docs?

Google is far from oblivious.

Even worse for them, this will make people question their search results in general. If people doubt the search results they will start looking at multiple search engines, compare results and aggregate them. Before Google became the predominant search engine you had to know which search engines were good for different topics and there were aggregation sites which would pass your search to multiple search engines and combine results.

This could be Google's "MySpace" moment.

True, I should have said "pretending to be oblivious."

The least of my concerns though is the tussle about white people in images. It is the scientific/ideological/religious/philosophical biases and misinformation that is far more damaging.

A long article about...GARBAGE IN...GARBAGE OUT.

And it is my opinion that Google is exactly that.

And that is why I never use Google.

Now Google is in a real pickle. If the AI isn’t woke-biased imagine what would be produced if it is asked to create a picture of “Chicago crime”. People will cry racism if the image is accurate.

___

It Doesn’t matter

Even conservatives will still keep using them and YouTube

For example, every day even people on here post YouTube links when the exact same thing is on Rumble. This drives traffic and ad revenue to google

These same people then complain about woke big tech 24/7

Ditto for MAGA people on twitter

I saw the video a year or so ago. Used duckduckgo to find it. I didn’t know it had a rumble link but rumble is certainly preferable.
