To the editor: There are two Adam Schiffs — the congressman and the candidate. I like the work the Burbank Democrat has done in the House and think he might be a good U.S. senator. (“Who needs passion or drama? Adam Schiff tries bland and steady in California U.S. Senate race,” column, Feb. 22)
However, Schiff’s campaign tactics are a complete turnoff, using the malleable Republican Steve Garvey to gang up on Rep. Katie Porter (D-Irvine). These tactics are the primary reason I won’t support Schiff in the primary.

For those of you outside California, it might be hard to even wrap your heads around what a cynical game both Schiff and Porter are playing in this election, both desperately trying to manipulate CA’s beleaguered cohort of GOP voters.
CA has a primary wherein the top 2 vote-getters make it to the general election regardless of party affiliation.
Schiff bombards the airwaves with “Stop Garvey” ads that showcase Steve Garvey’s bona fides as a conservative and Trump supporter, with the aim of securing enough GOP/independent votes to ensure that Garv finishes 2nd, ahead of Porter, obviously because he believes that he can easily take down Garv in the general.
Porter, on the other hand, is running ads that showcase Eric Early’s bona fides as a conservative and Trump supporter, with the aim of splitting GOP/independent votes between Garv and Early to ensure that Garv finishes 3rd, leaving the general election to Schiff and herself.
It’s the most cynical, weaselly political campaign I’ve ever seen in my life, but of course with Schiff involved, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Agreed. I too am voting for Garvey, as Eric Early is too far back at this point to make it into the top 2. Granted, Garv is exactly the candidate that Schiff is pushing, as Shifty thinks Garv will be a pushover chump in November. But what else can we do? Porter isn’t someone we can support. At least if Garv can come in 2nd, he makes the runoff and gives us a tiny chance of beating Schiff in November
