Tesla CEO Elon Musk criticized hormonal birth control and was met with stories from women about their personal experiences on the pill.
"Hormonal birth control makes you fat, doubles risk of depression & triples risk of suicide. This is the clear scientific consensus, but very few people seem to know it," Musk wrote Friday on X, formerly Twitter, citing a 2017 news article from Time about studies on hormonal birth control.
The Time article discussed how an American Journal of Psychiatry study indicated women who take hormonal contraceptives have a three times higher risk of suicide than those who never took hormonal birth control. Another study in the article found that women on hormonal birth control have a 70% higher risk of depression. The article did not mention weight gain.
"I was placed on the pill at just 14 years old for acne. A few months later, I saw my first-ever therapist despite no prior history of depression," Babylon Bee contributor Ashley St. Clair said in response to Musk's post. "In retrospect, after being on birth control for nearly a decade, being placed on the pill for 'acne' was akin to killing a mouse with a rocket launcher."
Tammy Peterson, wife of psychologist Jordan Peterson, said: "I suffered from depression from the hormonal birth control. Elon is absolutely correct."
Others voiced their opposition to Musk's remarks.
Brianna Wu, executive director of the progressive Rebellion PAC, said: "The right wing is coming for your birth control."

Thanks for the explanation.
Of course, what is considered “successful” in the sexual arena is highly dependent on the person.
At the end of the day both men and women who are promiscuous are wanting from a moral standpoint.
“Stats show that most men can have one or two dozen “affairs” without it appreciably affecting their ability to subsequently “settle down” and be happy with a single partner. But a woman who has had two dozen men - she’s ruined for (married) life.”
I wanted to ask if you could point me in the direction of some supporting evidence for this. Thanks.
Glad to! Just google "ability to pair bond" and "promiscuity!"
Might try including "sex differences," too!
You'll have to wade through / skip over a lot of scientific articles on the breeding habits of, e.g., the Common Prairie Vole - and you'll also have to be on the look-out for numerous articles assiduously attempting to avoid pointing out the obvious differences in male and female psychology and mating strategies. But that's a start.
Regards,
What a "namby-pamby" response! "It depends upon what your definition of 'is' is," "There are exceptions to the rule," etc. - pure sophistry and avoidance.
My "key/lock" analogy stands. Anyone with an ounce of commonsense will agree.
At the end of the day both men and women who are promiscuous are wanting from a moral standpoint.
That is a purely moral judgement, and I took absolutely no stance in that regard. You are free to believe what you will in that respect; you will get no argument from me.
I was speaking merely about the fact that a man has to break his butt to get "action," while a woman doesn't. That fact has real-world implications!
And then there's the neurochemical aspect and the verified loss of a woman's ability to pair-bond. The consequences are probably more devastating to a woman's ability to find happiness in life than the other risks (which can, after all, be mitigated).
Regards,
I’ll stand by my remark on what is considered “successful” is highly dependent on the person (influenced by culture, upbringing, etc).
My "key/lock" analogy stands. Anyone with an ounce of commonsense will agree.
Eh. Whenever I see use of the word “commonsense” and phrase “common sense”, I think of gun control advocates who like to use such terms to foreclose discussion on gun control or posit that those who hold different viewpoints lack common sense. Using it in this discussion is unfortunate, so will leave the discussion as is.
There’s nothing wrong with birth control if it’s safe and healthy. Musk is saying this particular method is unhealthy. What’s wrong with saying that?
does he use b.c.? Nope i did not think so.
>> Women on hormonal birth control are more likely to choose men they wouldn’t normally choose. <<
Yes, this is true, something to do with changes in women’s response to pheromones when on the Pill.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the increased divorce rate and the increase in domestic violence?
For the first, women choose a man and marry him while on the Pill; when she goes off the Pill to have a child, she is suddenly no longer attracted to him and so they divorce.
For the second, women choose badly and end up with a jerk.
>> personality changes <<
Whoa... I know someone whose personality changed drastically... right around the time she started using a new type of Pill. We got along pretty well before, but now she is very difficult!
>> The Pill ushered in the sexual revolution. How’s that been working for society lately? <<
On any level, societal or individual, the sexual revolution has been a disaster.
“Says the man with 11 children by three different mothers”
If any/all of his kids inherit his genes for logic and being pro-freedom, then I’m comfortable with 11 more of them in the world. They’re good for our country.
Trump has kids with three different mothers. It’s not an ideal situation, but he’s good for our country.
” think guys who screw around are alpha males but women who screw around are $luts. “
That’s true, and most likely that belief never will change. I think that, overall, men are as pro-bc and pro-abortion as women are. It makes it easier for them to be promiscuous and avoid responsibility.
If you’re expecting “thou shalt not use rubbers”, you’ll be disappointed. Are you sure you even know how to read the Bible? It’s not the Christian Owners Manual that Protestants have been told it is.
The sacred authors held contraception in such horror and disgust that they used veiled language, as with homosexuality and sodomy. Do you know what” pharmakeia” is?
Sorry, if I'm going to be damned to Hell for all Eternity for using a rubber, then these authors had better spell it out in black and white so as to make it absolutely clear.
Regards,
Yeah, let's derail the conversation by getting "hung up" on a single word like "commonsense" you find problematic. Nit-picking! Injecting the topic of "gun control" is another purely diversionary tactic.
But if you insist, I'll rephrase myself:
99 out of 100 FReepers will agree that an average-looking woman with little to no "game" / money / social status, etc. can effortlessly land a succession of bed partners (e.g., a different decent-looking man every night for a month); in contrast, a man would have to either be a top-tier celebrity, well-known billionaire, or the like to accomplish the same unless he is extremely handsome, employs superb "game," and/or bends over backwards.
Regards,
No, not at all. I’m asking you to have a discussion without resorting to “What a "namby-pamby" response!”, and "It depends upon what your definition of 'is' is”, and “…pure sophistry and avoidance”, and “anyone with an ounce of commonsense will agree”. Saying they 99 out of 100 FReepers would agree with your assertion is more of the same. I’m dubious of that claim BTW. So, will really leave it as is now.
Note - the sentiments expressed on this thread dovetail with more than a few FReepers that don’t believe that women in the US should have the right to vote. This is a sentiment that’s getting posted more and more.
It’s not a good trend.
I’m all for married women voting. It’s the single women that are killing us.
Re: 76 - well, it’s got to be dealt with.
An interesting thought - but it doesn't justify the double standard. ;-)
You might be damned for believing in a god who has a duty to satisfy your demands.
But, just for the record:
Deuteronomy 18:10
Isaiah 47:9-12
Nahum 3:4
Wisdom of Solomon 12:2ff
Galatians 5:19
Apocalypse 18:23.
