Alexei Navalny’s Death Marks End of Political Dissent in Russia
Wall Street Journal via MSN (means no pay wall) ^ | Feb. 17, 2024 | Ann M. Simmons

ussian opposition figure Alexei Navalny’s death Friday at a Russian prison camp in the Arctic silenced a man who was arguably the most influential remaining critic of President Vladimir Putin and the authoritarian state the former spy has methodically built on the wreckage of the Soviet Union.

Putin, who has effectively run Russia for 24 years and is seeking to extend his time in office for another six years in elections set for next month, now strides the Russian political stage with almost no visible challengers. Many of those who have opposed him have ended up in prison, or dead.

Since Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Kremlin has introduced laws to punish critics of its military campaign, muzzled independent media, branded pro-peace authors and artists as “foreign agents” and denied Russians the ability to publicly express opinions about the war. Authorities have unleashed a wave of repression to ensure compliance. Many ordinary citizens have been swept up in a crackdown and handed fines and lengthy jail times for what authorities view as discrediting the army or spreading misinformation about Russia’s stalled military campaign. A 72-year-old woman who questioned Russia’s conduct in the war in Ukraine online was sentenced recently to 5½ years in jail.

Biden is learning from the master of crushing dissent, Putin who learned from Stalin.

Stalin is quoted as saying, "Death solves all problems, no man, no problem."

I am far, far more concerned about the rabid totalitarian regime at home here in America than any regime overseas.

Can you imagine trying to lock up your political opponents? Only under Russian rule. Can you imagine locking hundreds up in a DC gulag for the crime of raising their voices? Thank goodness, our police state has the most effective propaganda machine the world has ever seen. Most US dullards are smiling all along the road to totalitarian repression.

Killing one man in prison did not decrease political dissent. It was like pushing a beachball under the water. It’s not on top the water where it’s visible, but the force required to keep it submerged will get increasingly difficult to bear. Dissent went from being visible to fleeing the country, to sabotaging the regime where no one can see it. Things as varied as letting the air out of tires on military vehicles to making weapons that fail. It went from one big, noticeable thing to thousands of unnoticeable things that may, over time, add up to regime collapse. This is a game the Russian people have played since about 1905.

Yep, that Putin guy is a bastion of morality, the pinnacle of Christianity.

He rails against “the West” and her descent into whatever, while this sombich divorces his wife and shacks up with a girl young enough be his daughter, passes red meat legislation but fails to ban abortion, and kills enemies like a Clinton.

Putin has the Cross in his hand and the devil in his heart. Anyone who looks up to this POS isn’t a conservative.

The death of Gonzalo Lira marked the end of political dissent in Ukraine, but the MSM doesn’t care.

In fact I had to get outside the big search engines to recall his name and not get flooded with articles about Brent Renaud.

Is it possible Navalny had the covid shot? Dying on a walk at his age sounds similar to many stories here back in the US.

Yes Putin probably eliminated an opponent. Yes it’s a dictatorial thing to do.
Yet he seems to be treating the vast majority of Russians leniently and has their best interest in mid.

While Biden is flooding us with millions of illegals who will kill or rob 1000s of us , take jobs from 100s of thousands and use up billions of dollars in services. Then there are 100s of people from Jan 6 that did no more than trespass and protest who have been in jail for many months.

So which one is the greater evil?

Putin or Biden?

Biden has been jailing and killing opponents for 23 years, like Putin?

“Alexei Navalny’s Death Marks End of Political Dissent in Russia”

Just like Jan 6th.

Anyway, as far as Russia is concerned, the Neocons had a good thing going - they were ‘socializing’ younger Russians with the allure of the West, much as they did during the Soviet times, and they were making progress.

But then the Neocons, led by Victoria Nuland, went for the BIG GRAB, that being Ukraine, and as far as the vast majority of Russians were concerned, they might as well had gone after Moscow. The relatively small number of remaining ‘reformers’ had about as much credibility as the American Nazi Party after Pearl Harbor, and many simply left for Europe (to be treated like crap there, since they are still Ruzzians, but that’s another story).

Navalny himself was an NPC by the time he died.

Remember Gonzalo Lira was an American Citizen, there isn’t much difference between Putin putting one of his main critics in prison and having him poisoned versus the USA allowing a country we are bankrolling to jail an American Journalist and killing him.

The USA has charged Julian Assange a number of crimes, he is rotting away in a UK jail, Assange will get out of prison in a pine box, instead poisoning him, the USA is using allies to jail and kill off their political enemies.

LOL, the Russian point of view: all our neighbors must prefer the EU to our Russian-BananaStan Economic Group(CIS) because of Nuland/CIA and not that its the much better choice due to higher standard of living.

Since ... Democrats ... have introduced laws to punish critics of its fill-in-the-blank campaign, muzzled independent media, branded pro-freedom authors and artists as “foreign agents” and denied Americans the ability to publicly express opinions. Authorities have unleashed a wave of repression to ensure compliance. Many ordinary citizens have been swept up in a crackdown and handed fines and lengthy jail times for what authorities view as discrediting the election process or spreading misinformation about Biden's campaigns. A 78-year-old man who questioned Democrats conduct in the elections in serval states was fine hundreds of millions of dollars recently with several Kangaroo Court criminal proceedings to follow.

With very little change to the wording, it fits 2024 America.
