The U.S. believes Russia wants to put a nuclear weapon in space, according to reports sparked by a top Republican warning about a 'serious national security threat'.
House Intel Chair Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio said members of Congress had been made aware of the threat which is reported to be related to Russia and its threat from space - but wouldn't go into details.
It later emerged that it was related to Moscow's plan to put a nuclear weapon into space to target and destroy satellites the world depends on, ABC News reported.
Turner asked the president to declassify the information so lawmakers could discuss the ramifications in the ominous warning that sparked a response from the White House and furious speculation.
Moscow has already shown how it can be lethal from space by testing a hit-to-kill anti-satellite missile in 2021.
Russia smashed a defunct spy satellite launched in 1982 into 1,500 pieces of debris in the strike and sparked fury around the world.
Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., was one of the first lawmakers to view the documents in the SCIF on Wednesday afternoon.
He told reporters that the threat is 'not an immediate crisis but certainly something we have to be very serious about.'
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Wednesday he was 'surprised' Turner came publicly about the threat related to a 'destabilizing foreign military capability.'
'That's been on the books. So I am a bit surprised that Congressman Turner came out publicly today in advance of a meeting on the books for me to go sit with him alongside our intelligence and defense professionals tomorrow,

I thought the biggest threat was right wing white maga people.
That’s it?
YESSS! My first thought when I read the story.
I don’t disagree. I think nukes in space is a bad idea because they would blind everything in a pretty large area where they are detonated. They are certainly not very discriminating.
I would be concerned because they could be used to detonate a nuke at elevation that could effect an EMP that could impact a large region of the land below it.
Using a nuke in space is more akin to a sledge hammer than a scalpel.
That said, I am not peeved at the method that was used to get this out into the public. It was middle school drama queen crap. Our “leaders” are just out of control these days. It is a clumsy and irresponsible political farce.
What Knockers!
Why thank you doctor.
“Some people call me “Maurice.”

Fly me to the Moon!
Double secret security threat.
September 13, 1985, an Air Force pilot pushed his F-15A into a steep climb at near-supersonic speeds as he prepared to launch into history taking down a U.S. military reconnaissance satellite

We don’t ned nukes up there, we already have satellite killers up there!
If nukes in space are what Russia has actually proposed, it would be a way to attack whole constellations and orbit regimes at once, through both radiation effects and making debris environments very dangerous to satellite operators. But its toxic to all users of space systems, including Russia. The only rationale behind exercising such a weapon would be if Russia believed they could gain more by taking out our space infrastructure than they would lose by taking out their own as well.
The US is far more reliant on space than our adversaries are. That balance is changing over time with the russians and chinese making use of space. They are doing their best to catch up to us. While we want to stay out in front, as adversaries become reliant on space systems themselves, the motivation to go ‘scorched Earth in space’ may lessen.
But the russians would probably be willing to go that path believing they gain more than they lose. After all, they are willing to take huge losses fighting WWI style trench warfare in Ukraine. Their philosophy in space warfare would probably be similar.
Don’t the Romulans already have a ring of nukes around the Erf?
Very strong legs too.
