The commander of an East Coast destroyer squadron that recently returned from an extended deployment aboard USS Gerald R Ford (CVN-78) was removed from his position on Saturday.
Capt. William "Mac" Harkin was removed from command of the Norfolk, Va. based Destroyer Squadron 2, by the commander of Carrier Strike Group 12 Rear Adm. Erick Eslich, "due to loss of confidence in Capt. Harkin's ability to perform his duties," reads a Navy statement.
"Capt. James Von St. Paul will assume the duties s commodore of Destroyer Squadron 2. Harkin will be temporarily assigned to the staff of Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic. There is no impact to the command's mission due to the relief.
A Naval Surface Force Atlantic spokesperson would not provide USNI News additional details when asked. A Navy official told USNI News was due to conduct reasons, not performance, but he did not give additional details...

Maybe the CO couldn’t pass muster because he wasn’t woke enough.
Maybe if he kept it to HIMSELF, he’d still have a career ahead of him.
They found out he supported Trump.
Probably refused to wear high heels, thigh-highs and carry a purse....
I will never discount politics but I met enough folks in the military over the years who note issues.
They speak to me of drug, alcohol and sex problems.
I am sick to death of this crap. While part of this would respect him if he did speak out in support of some conservative view.
But most like he was banging a subordinate officer. And it is equally likely that it could be a man or a woman.
I can’t stand this. The Navy did so much for me in my life, and to see it like this now is just painful.
“I can’t stand this. The Navy did so much for me in my life, and to see it like this now is just painful.”
I hear you. It’s like it was a plan to emasculate the military. The Leftists knew if they sent women into the ranks, they’d get justification to rid themselves of most of the REAL MEN there.
Gotta make room for more DEI promotions.
It appears he was “temporary” commander since 2020 when 2 others were ousted…
Two-bits says that it had something to do with females aboard. Ever since since incorporating females into the fighting vessels, morale has been diminished, readiness has been reduced and families broken. There was an article on some un-recalled site a few years ago about the number of pregnancy leaves recorded nine months after an aircraft carrier returns from deployment.
“Maybe the CO couldn’t pass muster because he wasn’t woke enough.”
Exactly what I was thinking.
A Clear And Present Danger in today’s US Navy.
“Maybe the CO couldn’t pass muster because he wasn’t woke enough.”
Perhaps he was just an elderly man with a poor memory. Wouldn’t that justify his removal?
I know. It bothers me.
I grew up as a military dependent, son of a 30 year Navy officer whose career spanned WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. I served four years myself, and learned a lot about what I was capable of.
I have always felt a debt. But this? This insanity? I am glad my Dad isn’t around to watch it.
My first guess
Ever since since incorporating females into the fighting vessels, morale has been diminished, readiness has been reduced and families broken....
The libs goal have been accomplished.
“Maybe the CO couldn’t pass muster because he wasn’t woke enough.”
Maybe he was a hard ass and had a crew of wimps + one wimp with a spine but also a big mouth.
IIRC, the stat was that fleetwide, up to 40% of women got pregnant and had to be assigned shore duty. The men still at sea then have to pick up their slack.
I heard that a while back that US Navy surface warships manned with females were called “The Love Boat” by the sailors.
From my brother who was USNA graduate.
