I will never discount politics but I met enough folks in the military over the years who note issues.
They speak to me of drug, alcohol and sex problems.

My first guess
The CO was caught bragging about his geography skills by reciting every country in Africa in alphabetical order.
When he got partway through the Ns he got fired.
