Federal Court Orders Louisiana Legislative Districts Be Redrawn

A federal court ruled Thursday that Louisiana’s state House and Senate district maps dilute black voting strength in violation of the Voting Rights Act, and has ordered the maps to be redrawn.

The ruling by U.S. District Chief Judge Shelly Dick came just weeks after Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry signed on Jan. 22 a bill creating a new congressional map that establishes a second majority-black district. The new map reshapes Louisiana’s 6th District, that of Rep. Garret Graves (R-La.), giving it a black population of around 56 percent and making it the state’s second majority-black district.

In her ruling on Feb. 8, Ms. Dick said “the Enacted House Map unnecessarily concentrates the Black population into one district while dividing the rest of the Black population into smaller districts.”

“The Court finds that the Black population in Baton Rouge has grown by 25 percent between 2000 and 2020, and the Enacted House Map does not properly account for this significant growth,” the ruling states.

Notice how the courts' orders for states to redraw their legislative district maps usually only goes one way. A blue state can gerrymander their districts to allow the fewest conservative districts possible.

It really ticks me off that the Courts continually endorse divisions based upon skin color.

Looks like Louisiana is about 32% Black. So to comply with the judge's wishes, they need to make sure each congressional district is as close to 32% Black as possible. That will certainly avoid unnecessary concentration.

The actions of this court will serve to “dilute black voting strength”; can’t have sufficient numbers of black human beings voting for Trump now.

Are blacks being prevented from voting if they live in a white district ? What if more whites or Asians move to this district ? How black do you have to be to be considered black enough for these voting districts ?

A judge who has the cognitive ability of someone about like Joe Biden...

This strengthens “black representation”... and the judge claims the Baton Rouge area was weakened - yet the new map actually recognizes the growth of the black population and strengthened (to now the 2nd such Black-majority district).

I guess this brain-dead judge would have demanded the Blacks get two votes each as a form of reparations...

Everybody knows white people won’t vote for black people, which explains why we had a black president for 8 years.

They did the same thing in Alabama. Dems will pick up another seat in the House because of it.

At one time, dems wanted districts to be solidly black so they knew they would win a seat. They got that and then realized they wanted something else. Now they want to design districts to where they were most likely to win to possibly add more seats.

Honestly, the seats should be designed without tailoring them to suit the dems wishes. That’s all it’s about now. Dems control the courts and are sinking this nation.
