Senate advances $95B Ukraine, Israel aid bill with filibuster-proof majority after border deal implodes

The Senate overwhelmingly voted Thursday to start work on a $95 billion spending bill that would provide aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan — one day after it formally killed off a larger bill that included $20 billion in border security spending.

The 67-32 vote included “yeas” from 17 Republicans while Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) was the only “nay” from the Democratic conference.

A final vote on the legislation is not expected until next week as senators begin the lengthy process of negotiating which amendments will be voted on as part of the final package.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called Thursday’s vote “a good first step.”

I think the Constitution would smile on stand-alone bills.

And what’s with a revenue bill originating in the Senate? I think the Constitution frowns on that.

Better read the fine print. This has the stink of the last bill all over it.

I am so tired of traitors that call themselves Republicans. And there are a lot of them in the House and the Senate.

With only a couple of exceptions, it is all the typical Rinos, i.e., McConnell’s people.

Good thing Roy Blunt is gone. Missouri has two solid Senators now.

I doubt this goes anywhere in the House. If Speaker Johnson advances to a vote, he will be out of the Speakership. No way the Freedom Caucus lets this go as-is.

“John Kennedy (R-LA)

Everybody loves this guy. Folksy, charming, great one-liners. Never misses a chance to support the establishment.”

He is very good at making libs look stupid. Of course, this is not really that much of a challenge.

The Senators aren’t going to do without the corrupt payola from the military industrial complex. There are still resort getaways and yachts to buy…

Joe Biden can act on the border through executive actions. He doesn't need a bill.

I agree, I'm quite happy that this administration and the current Senate are NOT passing border legislation. We just got a glimpse of what they would codify into law and it was way worse than what we have now.

They tried to pass it to handcuff Trump and for no other reason.

There are tons of bills that have passed the House, and just sit.
The Senate can take that bill, rip out every single word, and put in new words.
The Senate can now pass the newly worded bill.
The new bill sent back to the House, originated in the House.

As Jim Noble insightfully posted earlier:

1) what does money for Israel and Ukraine have to do with immigration?

2) why do existing, perfectly adequate, immigration laws need to be changed in the first place?

Noble: The fact that Biden does not faithfully execute existing law does not indicate
the need for any new laws, especially new laws which wreck the laws that already exist.

No real surprise to see Cornyn supporting more spending of unicorn dollars. It is being whispered around Texas that he is serving his last term. Not sure of the source of those whispers but if true, expect him to be another Collins - an unreliable conservative vote.

“National Divorce is the answer.
No Civil War - Civil Separation
Choose Freedom - Choose Peace”

Agreed. No one in their right mind wants civil war. Those that do have no idea just how bad it would be. Food, heat, gasoline and other necessities would be cut off for weeks if not months for much of the population.

But sooner or later the divide between red and blue will cause something to happen. And I hope this happening is what you call a “national divorce”.

If Johnson tries to allow a vote on this, he should be removed as speaker. All 17 need to be primaried
