English comedy icon Rowan Atkinson, forever applauded for his on-screen creation Mr. Bean, has been blamed for “damaging” the reputation of electric vehicles (EVs) and contributing to slow sales simply by expressing his opinion on their future – or lack of it.
The actor was name-checked in the British House of Lords on Tuesday during its environment and climate change committee meeting, Sky News reports.
Thinktank Green Alliance outlined the main obstacles the government faces in its bid to push petrol and diesel cars to the kerb before 2035, pointing to a newspaper comment piece by the Johnny English star published in June 2023 as damaging to the cause.
The pressure group told peers in a letter an opinion piece by Atkinson damaged the cause of EV take-ups.
The 69-year-old actor’s piece was headlined: “I love electric vehicles – and was an early adopter. But increasingly I feel duped.”

CENSOR MORE!
"One of the most damaging articles was a comment piece written by Rowan Atkinson in The Guardian which has been roundly debunked.
Unfortunately, fact checks never reach the same breadth of audience as the original false claim, emphasising the need to ensure high editorial standards around the net zero transition."
I sense a new Blackadder series in this...
Remember the Dolt Obama in a Volt ,LOL
Go Bean!
I’d believe Mr Bean before I’d believe the EV pushers.
Blackadder and Johnny English!
He has a cunning plan.
As a supporter of free speech, he did. And, he engaged in wrongthink. That is all he said. He expressed doubts, and some pinheads (probably all of 3 members) claim he is a Nazi. Not really, but that is next if he replies.
He has a “small” part in the Wonka movie. He was good, I have not seen him in quite some time. My wife and I loved him as Mr. Bean.
I liked him as the ‘Black Adder’, an inept villain in Medieval England, on PBS & British TV..........
I have not seen Blackadder. I will check it out.
I will have to look for it, thanks.
Love "The Thin Blue Line" !
There were 4 series set in different time periods, with Rowan playing the central character, which was a descendant of the original Black Adder..............
Rowan Atkinson actually has degrees in electrical engineering.
He may not be clueless idiot he plays on the telly.
Thank RB, I will look for it!
There were some ‘one-off’ made-for-TV movies and ‘specials’, with his character, like the obligatory Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” and others....................

I’ve seen one of his movies, and I remember watching Mr. Bean. He’s a great comedic actor.
He’s also very smart:
From Wiki:
Atkinson was brought up Anglican, and was educated at the Durham Chorister School, a preparatory school, and then at St Bees School. Rodney, Rowan and their older brother Rupert were brought up in Consett and went to school with the future Prime Minister, Tony Blair, at Durham Choristers.
After receiving top grades in science A levels, he secured a place at Newcastle University, where he received a BSc degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1975.
He subsequently obtained an MSc degree in Electrical Engineering at The Queen’s College, Oxford in 1975, the same college where his father matriculated in 1935, and which made Atkinson an Honorary Fellow in 2006. His master’s thesis, published in 1978, considered the application of self-tuning control.
Atkinson briefly embarked on a PhD study before devoting his full attention to acting.
