I beat you by a year. A single shot bolt action .22 doubtless a significant contribution to my poor hearing now 70 years later.

“Dangerous decision: if the kid had taken the firearm without permission, would the parents still be liable criminally or civilly? If a burglar steals my firearm and kills someone, am I responsible for not having kept in a gun safe?
My father bought me a .22 when I was 12 or 13.”

I agree. The school was concerned about his behavior but didn’t bother to search his backpack that day. They also met with his mother, but recommended he be allowed to remain at school. They, and others, are just as culpable based upon this jury’s reasoning.

Agree. The prosecutors wanted to move toward criminalizing gun ownership like in the UK. And they managed to sell it to a jury. When you go to trial you are innocent, but the jury sees you sitting at the defense table with your lawyer and thinks you have to have done SOMETHING to get into that spot. So one strike against you before you even start.

And the parents fled

“After the shooting, the Crumbleys allegedly fled Oxford and went to Detroit following some initial questioning from police. U.S. Marshals eventually apprehended them days later on Dec. 4, 2021.” Foxnews

He told his parents what he was going to do.
They told nobody.
Then they bought him guns and he did it.
Yeah, they are directly responsible.

“He told his parents what he was going to do. They told nobody. Then they bought him guns and he did it. Yeah, they are directly responsible.”

That’s a lie. I followed the trial and there was no evidence whatsoever of that.

Then why was she found guilty?
I guess that the jury is lying too.
And the prosecutors.
And the judge.
And the court system.

I don’t like being called a liar.

She was found guilty because juries like to blame someone when a horrific tragedy like this occurs. The kid was old enough to know the difference between right and wrong and chose to do wrong, Finding him guilty wasn’t enough for prosecutors looking for scalps so they trumped up some phony charges against the mother and sold the jury on it. A disgusting and disgraceful banana republic move to intimidate gun owners and a small step toward criminalizing gun ownership just like in the tyrannical UK.

“don’t raise your child to be a mass murdering thug”

I doubt she intended to do that. There is zero indication that she put him in a jihadi / mass murdering thug training camp.

Are your parents responsible for the dumb stuff you did/do? I don’t blame my parents for the dumb stuff I have done and I don’t think it is legally tenable to blame this mother either

“I don’t like being called a liar.”

Then don’t tell them. You said, in post #69, “He told his parents what he was going to do. They told nobody. Then they bought him guns and he did it. Yeah, they are directly responsible.”

I followed the trial. There was never any such evidence produced at the trial (i.e., that the kid told his parents he was going to go shoot up the school; that the parents not only ignored it, but went out and bought him the gun!).

So, yeah; you lied.
