But some Western trappers worry that new ESA protections for the species could limit or even shut down legal trapping opportunities in areas that overlap with wolverine habitat.

And that's what this is about for a lot of the supporters of listing them under the ESA. A means to an end.

I came face to face with a wolverine in N Idaho a few years ago while waiting for my fishing hub & grandson. Not nice...backed me up to a fence...not fun.
