The FR Canteen is Free Republic's longest running daily thread
specifically designed to provide entertainment and moral support for the military.
The doors have been open since Oct 7 2001,
the day of the start of the war in Afghanistan.
We are indebted to you for your sacrifices for our Freedom.
I noticed that today’s playlist includes Anne Murray’s “You Needed Me.” In case you’re wondering what that song is about, here’s my interpretation. The song seems to have been inspired by several major news events.
“I cried a tear, you wiped dry.
I was confused, you cleared mind.”
An allusion to the riots and outbreaks of violence that convulsed the nation in 1919 and to those leaders like Governor Calvin Coolidge of Massachusetts and Mayor Ole Hansen of Seattle who courageously took firm and resolute action to restore order, even to the point of using tear gas.
“I sold my soul, you bought it back for me
And held me up, and gave me dignity.
Somehow, you needed me.”
An obvious reference to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 and its rejection by the US Senate, which refused to sell out American sovereignty to an international organization and give foreign bureaucrats a say over how we conduct our affairs. This is followed by a verse praising the Republicans led by Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge (R-Mass.) et al for sinking the treaty. Now that the treaty was rejected, the US could conduct its foreign affairs unimpeded by entangling alliances:
“You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again…”
“And I don’t believe it’s you, I can’t believe it’s true. .
I needed you, and you were there.
And I’ll never leave, why should I leave?
I’d be a fool,
For I finally found someone who really cares.”
This verse refers to the 1920 Republican National Convention in Chicago and the joy felt by Republican delegates over the choice of Sen. Warren G. Harding (R-Ohio) as their presidential standard bearer and Massachusetts Gov. Calvin Coolidge as his running mate—two men who sincerely cared about making America great again.
“You held my hand when it was cold.”
To many pundits, the Wilsonian progressive tone of the Democratic platform seemed to be a winning hand. By contrast, the GOP platform, with its emphasis on restoring outmoded Constitutionalist principles, seemed to be a cold hand full of deuces and treys.
“When I was lost, you took me home.”
A reference to Sen. Harding’s decision to campaign from the front porch of his home in Marion, Ohio..
“You gave me hope when I was at the end
And turned my lies back into truth again.
You even called me “friend.”
A reference to Harding’s stirring campaign speeches to the crowds that gathered in Marion on Mt. Vernon Ave. before his front porch during the fall of 1920.
“You gave me strength to stand alone again,
To face the world out on my own again.
You put me high upon a pedestal,
So high that I could almost see eternity.
You needed me.”
A tribute to the American voters who put Harding, Coolidge and the Republicans in power. And to the Harding-Coolidge presidency, which restored American dignity and world leadership through its diplomatic and economic successes.
Howdy, Kathy.
Another day up there like yesterday. Foggy, then clearing off but that creepy fog wall to the north hung around for a while.
If your creek is still flowing at all, I’m impressed! LOL
