Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has made clear where House Republicans will draw the line on any agreement dealing with the border: allowing illegal crossings.
“Any border ‘shutdown’ authority that ALLOWS even one illegal crossing is a non-starter. Thousands each day is outrageous. The number must be ZERO,” Mr. Johnson wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Jan. 29.
The deal, whose text is set to be released this week, reportedly would permit the president to close ports of entry if illegal crossings reach a certain threshold.
One of the negotiators, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), announced on Jan. 28 that a proposal was almost ready.
“This bill could be ready to be on the floor of the United States Senate next week,” he said on CNN, “but it won’t be if Republicans decide that they want to keep this issue unsettled for political purposes.”
The White House called on Congress to give the president the ability to protect the border.
“Until recently, Mr. Johnson advocated for HR2 because, in his view, presidents needed new legal authorities in order to secure the border,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wrote in a memo.
*** “But make no mistake, President Biden pledged on Friday to ‘shut down the border. However, with the stroke of a pen, he could begin by restoring Remain in Mexico, ending catch and release, [and] reforming asylum and parole standards. His refusal places our national sovereignty at stake.” ***

Biden should have been taken into custody on the day he threw open the border and charged with treason, to wit; failure to stop a foreign invasion.
The cowardice and complicity of the RINO GOP is appalling. If President Trump manages to make a comeback, he should make it absolutely clear that the RINOs will get zero from him as a republican president.
Expose their treasonous duplicity and make certain that they NEVER return to power under any circumstances whatever.
The trade off is supposedly that Biden and the defense contractors want billions more for Ukraine, and the republicans want border security.
If the House republicans cave, then Biden will get his Ukraine money and still not close the border.
It’s the oldest trick in American politics, and the republicans would be idiots to fall for it.
Give Biden nothing, not even lunch money, or he’ll screw the country and then gloat about how he got over on MAGA.
“It’s preposterous that the White House claims the POTUS doesn’t have the authority to control the border.”
Can anyone cite the laws relevant to this dispute over who has the power to do what? Thanks!
I am sure there are a slew of laws on the books. Only the Executive Branch has the power to enforce the border laws as has been argued time and again, most recently with the dispute with Texas. The Executive Branch is simply choosing to ignore them, or to prioritize other powers of discretion such as asylum qualifications.
Why can’t we have stand alone bills?
Never mind that the President already has the power. Biden even used it a few months ago when that vehicle flipped and exploded at a US-Canadian border crossing.
I’m starting to like this guy, but proof will be in the pudding.
Verify BEFORE Trust.
Well, this dreadful proposed legislation would actually make it more difficult for a president to close the border. The Dems are hedging their bets on the possibility of Trump being the next president.
The number should be in the negative by the millions.
I think it’s because of the RINOs in the Senate.
Apparently they are very big supporters of the government’s defense contractors, the ones that President Eisenhower warned us about, what he called the “Military Industrial Complex”.
They are enormously wealthy and powerful, and in combination with the intel community, these are the folks that are actually running the government.
Whenever the House sends an appropriations bill, the RINOs automatically add the Ukraine Funding amendment to it and send it back to the House for reconciliation, which of course doesn’t happen because the GOP leadership in the House isn’t interested in paying for condos and yachts for corrupt Ukrainian friends of Joe Biden.
The end result is a standoff. The House wants to get the border under control, which the democrats won’t do because these are their new democrat voters.
This is where we are now.
Pathetic.
The only thing it takes to end the invasion is the will to do it. No new laws are needed.
Amen
Simple...
Dig up the remains of Ted Kennedy and sprinkle him on top of the border, informing the invaders that non-Constitutional laws are henceforth dismissed...
Then round up all the "sneaky" invaders and send them back to their parent's country of origin...
Foreigners are welcome to return through the standard & proscribed immigration procedures that helped make our country great...
Immigration was designed and operated to be important to the Nation's future... Immigrants were expected to become part of, and contribute to, the Nation's legal, moral, economic, and cultural character...
Migrant invasion was designed to destroy the moral, cultural, economic, and political fabric of the Nation...
Its success has thoroughly transformed the Nation into the planet's largest 3rd world nation...
Thanks, great reply. Hope those words spread!
NOT ONLY ‘no new illegals’ but the ones here need to go back home.
Heh, lol Liz!
Because the Dems that currently own the Senate won’t pass anything until their pet project gets funded.
The ‘ZERO’ statement is for number ALLOWED, not number that are accomplished despite the honest best efforts of everyone. Right now, ICE is ALLOWING all the crossings. They’re not even trying to throw them back. The number allowed should be zero.
The RINOs in the Senate aren’t putting anything in. They’re *agreeing* to what the Dems are putting on it, but they’re not originating it.
To be objective - yes. Venezuela is killing their citizens.
Honduras is showing signs of going that way too, but has not yet, so they don’t qualify.
I’m sure you’re correct.
The RINOs are altogether too ‘agreeable’
