China built more solar panels in 2023 than entire world in 2022

Beijing drives breakneck expansion in bid to hit peak CO2 emissions by 2030

--

China commissioned as much new solar power capacity in 2023 as the entire world did in 2022, as Beijing ramped up its drive to dominate the renewable energy market.

Renewable energy capacity surged globally last year, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a new report, driven chiefly by huge expansion in China.

“The world’s capacity to generate renewable electricity is expanding faster than at any time in the last three decades,” the IEA said, pointing out that capacity grew by 50pc globally in 2023...

China has a directed economy. The government decides on X, supplies money and material and workers and X gets done. The problem with that is government uses politics to decide what X is. A non-directed or (mostly) free market economy decides what is the most efficient way to get what society wants. Does society really want solar panels? And, if society does want solar panels, then whatever we do here would be strangled by China and their directed economy. So far, the US government’s interference with the economy has failed. Look at the giant battery facilities built by Obama which were then bought by the Chinese at cents on the dollar. Look at the market interference to force the public into adopting electric vehicles and the resulting literal disasters. We are probably heading into cheaper oil (due to a global recession) and when oil is cheap then more expensive power options, like solar panels, will evaporate.

The problem with Green tech is you spend three quarters of the investment up front in purchase, installation and setup. With other options, you just buy the energy as you need it. So if the majority of people are renting or might move, then investing in a high up front, long payoff play isn’t worth it.

China has some serious advantages

Forced labor has it’s advantages.

No pesky EPA harping about toxic waste or Environmental Impact Statements. Can you imagine trying to build the Three Gorges Dam in the US?

Everything out of China is a lie. It is virtue signaling by the CCP. They publish fake production figures in many market segments to BS foreign investors. If you are in China or around their area of influence and you publish derogatory information they will go after you, hard if you are a citizen. It is all a f***** lie.

They make a TON of things we used to make.

Lots, and lots, and lots.

Of everything.

Its a repeat of the “missile gap” of the early 1960s

If communist, centrally-planned China wants to use the power of its central government to waste money on inefficient “green energy” then let them do it.

And, Mexico made more fentanyl.

Your point?

Neither helps humanity. They only enrich the thugs.

Just because China is making a bunch of things that seem to have some utility, doesn't make it the right move.

China produces the world's demand for solar panels. Big deal. There are numerous examples of why solar panels in the current state of the science are a dead end technology. The same thing is true for wind-driven generators: the amount of electricity generated will never equal the amount of energy necessary to manufacture, install, maintain and operate the turbines over their predicted lifespan.

How long will it be before China realizes that there is no market for the EV’s they are cranking out outside of China itself? My point is that the committees that run the CCP are every bit as incompetent as those that run the rest of the world. They are fully capable of chasing some impossible dream down the rabbit hole as any other bureaucracy. The difference is that with a directed economy, China is capable of failing on a colossal scale. I would direct your attention to the “ghost cities” of unoccupied buildings in China and the collapse of the speculative housing market in China as a recent example of the folly the CCP is capable of pursuing.

Exactly! The Chinese use COAL generated electricity to manufacture solar panels that replace Natural Gas generated electricity.

It doesn’t surprise me, considering that their government can build whatever it wants without concerns about cost, profits, or whether what they make is any good. I hear they mine rare earth metals at a huge loss, just to keep the US from getting back into the rare earth business.

Have you also heard about the Chinese building cities in places where people don’t want to live?
