More likely the airlines laid off many skilled mechanics and maintenance workers during COVID and they hired too quickly and didn't train their replacements. And made a lot more "diversity" hires.
From what I've read passenger jet tires are replaced about every 3 months or so depending on flight cycles. A triple 7 with 14 tires may cost well over a million dollars every 3 months to replace the tires..

Looks like you are right on that. The article I read said $100K per tire versus $6K per tire you mention. It makes sense the total cost would be closer to $100K instead of $1M every 3 months..
No doubt this wheel was in the process of coming off when they last landed.
You should now also be afraid to be under any flight path as well.
