It is a MASER not a LASER - microwaves

Drones can be built with thin aluminum encasement of sensitive electronics. So back and forth continues the arms race.

Yeah. The way this sort of thing is usually done is with nutation. You wiggle the antenna a tiny amount and look for failure. Then you correct in the opposite direction of where failure (loss of accurate pointing) occurred. You have to do this because of target motion.

In this case you also face the reality that the target has low radar cross section, so you don’t have high confidence of where you want to point to begin with.

I’m sure the Raytheon tests have some very wide target that eliminates any issues of radar cross section and it will move in a simple path, and they may even cheat for their progress funding test by predicting that motion and easing the antenna to a predicted position, minimizing any nutation challenges (and certainly a low wind day so the antenna stays put).

That’s how I would construct testing for funding. Anyway, it’s probably not going to work on the battlefield.

"Does this laser weapon un-bankrupt the nation, restore its borders/sovereignty and reverse the collapse of society?

Yup.!! At this point in time, totally worthless, unless it can be used on the border, the cartels and Obama's army...

Worthless?

Just think of all the kick-backs to politicians and bureaucrats.

It’s economic development. New mansions on the beach, more yachts sold, golf vacations.

The Russian hypersonic weapon, it seems, is an ICBM fired from an aircraft.

It has a terminal guidance system and some limited ability to maneuver during the end-phase. It comes in from high altitude at a steep dive angle, so it is hard to stop.

A battery of counter missiles may be able to break up the incoming attackers. The Russian weapon seems to be used in swarm on the target, so the defenders must deal with 5-20 incoming attackers.

It might be possible to break up the attackers at their cruising altitudes (50 km) with a laser or plasma weapon, if the attackers can be detected, and if there is favorable weather.

Directed energy weapons so far have a very low rate of fire and do not work very well in cloudy or hazy air conditions. Power supplies are very heavy, making the weapons most suitable for ground-based or ship-based installations.

Those systems must be portable and quick moving. Anything in a fixed location will be hit.

Looks like a big payday for the Biden crime family when demented Joe sell the technology to his masters in China.

You forgot the money aspect-- too much to keep flying. Ground based may be better, but what do I know, I'm a fungologist, a word that does not exist.
